I have an Amiga 1000. I am getting a lot of read/write errors on my diskettes. I read a note in Amiga Tech which talked about an Amiga 500 user who had to beef up his power supply. The symptoms he described are the same as mine. Disks format and later he gets a lot of read/write errors. I also find that sometimes the CPU thinks a diskette is write locked when it is not. Anyway. Does anyone have a suggestion on what I can do about a power supply? I have a Microbotics Starboard with 2Mbytes and a CLtd. SCSI adapter. I would like to atleast power the memory board seperately. Any other suggestions for fixing this problem would be appreciated. Dean Cromack

I believe the A1000 has a 100Watt power supply. I think the early A500 problems were due to the fact that the power supply was only marginally capable of supporting the system wattage. I would check out the disk drive first. Unless of course both an internal and an external drive are failing. You might try disconnecting some of the hardware you've got and see if the drive gets any better. I recall other people having problems with the write lock hardware on the A1000. Several people actually had the mechanism fall off inside the drive. steve | |||||

Dean, I also have an A1000 with a setup very similar to yours (C-Ltd. SCSI host/controller and StarBoardII). FWIW, I have not had any power supply troubles, although I am running the StarBoard with only 1 Meg of memory installed, which may be tipping the scales in my favor. I did have to install the extra PAL grounding to get the expansion stuff to work reliably. I *did* experience the floppy write-lock error that you describe, though. Luckily, it was only the external drive that was having trouble; I took it apart and examined the write lock mechanism. There is a little arm which makes contact (or doesn't!) with the write lock tab in the diskette; attached to the arm is a magnet which closes a small magnetic leaf switch encased in a glass tube which is mounted to the PC board. It turned out that the tolerances were off just enough so that the magnet didn't always close the switch. I carefully and gently pried under the wires of the leaf switch to move it away from the PC board a small amount, closer to the magnet. Haven't had a problem since. |
