Hi All.
Well I've had my Amiga A500 a few months now and I'm having a lot of
fun. I'm now turning my attention to spreadsheets, databases etc.
I've been looking at the Public Domain software mentioned in this
conference, especially the Fish Disks.
Firstly how do I obtain the Fish Disks. Secondly I keep seeing the work
'ARC' memtioned. Are the Fisk Disks ARCed and if so what do I need to
unARC them. And finally how I keep up to date on what new Fish Disks
are relaesed.
Sorry if this all sounds trivial but us new users need to learn
somehow.

If you do a DIR/TITLE=FISH you will get all the notes pertaining
to Fish Disks. A listing you might be interested in is in note
294, this gives a brief description of all the Fish Disks. Print
it out and you will have a catalog. Welcom to the WORLD OF AMIGA.

Re: .0
Arc is a compression scheme from ... the IBM world, I believe.
Anyway, files with a .ARC extension are usually ARCed 'savesets'.
You need a copy of the ARC program on the Amiga to unpack them.
There are other packing schemes out there, but I think that ARC
and one called ZOO are the most widely used.
BTW, ARCed or ZOOed files are much better for downloading than
non-packed files. The packed files are smaller, have data checking
built in, etc.
ARC and ZOO are both available from almost anywhere (Fred Fish
disks, BBS, the EASYnet, and probably from your local dealer).
For a while, Ed Acciardi was offering a 'starter disk' to new Amiga
owners that included ARC and quite a few other useful utilities.
You may want to E-mail him and ask about it. (Can't remember his
node name now, but just read a few more notes and you should see
it. He's quite active in this notesfile.)
Hope that helps.
John
