Has anyone with a 2000 had problems with his/her real-time clock? I seem to have run into a problem. Everything on the system seems to work, but the clock. If i fire up the clock program, the time just says the time when I turned on the machine. If I click on an icon, wait a long time (1 minute) and click on it again, the program runs, as if I did a double click. That's why I think it's the clock. Also the screen blanker does not work anymore. If anyone has a clue as to the whereabouts of the clock, or how much it will cost me to fix it, or the possible causes of this type of tragedy, I would really appreciate some input. Thank you. jj

Re: .0 The Amiga's timers are located in the CIA chips. There are two CIA chips (the name stands for something like Complex Interface Adapter), one controls the parallel port and one controls the serial port. The CIA chips do seem to have a high failure rate. Since they are tied to the ports on the back of the compiler, they are somewhat prone to environmental damage (static, shorts from plugging and unplugging cords into the ports, ...). Replacement CIA chips are available. Previous notes describe cost and sources. Do both your serial and parallel ports work?

Re: .1 thanks a lot for the info Randy. i'll check the rest of the notes for cia info. the serial and parallel ports bothe seem to work ok, and the software that i've run since the problem occurred seems to work fine too. i guess dungeon master does not use the clock. thanks again jj

an update on the clock problem. i went out and bought a new 8520 chip, and opened up my box to find... not one, but two 8520's inside. that was news to me. by trial and error, i found that the chip on the right (as you look at your 2000) is the one that had the problem. it was very easy to replace. i hope this will help someone else in the future. BTW the 8520 cost a mere $16.00. thanks for your help jj |
