Re.0
Four steps to remove the noise coming from the disc drive.
1/ Remove Kickstart from the machine (the rom)
2/ Dramatically reconstruct AmigaDOS
3/ Blow your own rom
3/ Insert into socket where the rom was
4/ Pray
OR.......
Use your Amiga as a dumb Terminal by removing the disc
drive.
OR.......
Buy an ST.
But seriously folks.......
Sometimes having amigaDOS work out without you telling it that there
is a disc in the drive is quite a good idea. Some machines I have
used are worse than this and require that you enter something along
the lines of *MOUNT to use the disc......I wonder how many disc
swaps that would take on a one drive unexpanded A500??

| If you have a 1000 and you have drives that are compatible, you
can use a program provided by Andy Finkel of commodore. I believe
the 1.3 version is on NORSE::AMIGA:[UTILITIES]NOKLICK.UUE dated
Nov 15, 1988. This will modify your 1.3 kickstart disk (use a copy)
so that the drives don't click. If the drives still click, then
go back to the original kickstart. Some drives are NOT compatible
with this fix and over a period of time would actually be damaged
I believe. If the fix stops the drives from klicking then your
drives are OK.

| Re .4:
Steve, that is exactly what I am looking for. Yes, I do have an
A1000, and both drives are the same (built-in and the external A1010).
I'll check out the file you refer me to. Thanks for the info.

2363.6 | It works. | DEBIT::SOO | Chong Soo | Wed Mar 15 1989 18:59 | 5 |
| Yes, it worked for me. I believe there are two versions of the
noklick???, one for V1.2 and one for V1.3. I think I have both.
Let me know if you need one.

I tried the one already on the net. It didn't work with 1.3. Could
you upload the 1.3 version?

2363.8 | It is there. | BROKE::SOO | Chong Soo | Thu Mar 16 1989 23:20 | 17 |
| I have just uploaded noklickstart1.3 to NORSE::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]
NOKLICK1_3.SH. It is a "sh" file with the original Usenet posting
headers, "uuencoded" binary, and the C source in it. This version
should work. If after using it to modify your kickstart disk, your
drive(s) still clicks, you should stop using it and switch back
to your original kickstart disk.
I downloaded NOKLICK.UUE from NORSE::AMIGA:[UTILITIES]. The resulting
binary is 24 bytes larger than the version I have, is definitely
for kickstart V1.3, and loaded up and run fine. I did not try to
find out if it works, though. Could be the version that was mentioned
in the posting header that had a bug. Someone may want to remove this
one from [UTILITIES].
By the way, the binary should be 5276 bytes.
Chong.
