Have a question about ARC. Can we de-ARCed a file XXXX.ARC directly on VAX, then download all de-ARCed programs to AMIGA via XMODEM or VT100(kermit). Thanks and regards Michel

I find that I have to downlaod an ARCed file to my Amiga before deARCing it. Otherwise, the binaries don't work. I think it has something to do with the VMS ARC facility. I have seen explanations elsewhere on the conference. -Paul

I'm no expert about ARCing and deARCing but.... Is there any point in De-arcing before downloading to an Amiga? The file would be bigger, take up more disc spaces, take longer to download and a host of more problems. -Ian- Ian Norris, Dec Park I, England.

If you only want one or two files out of a large archive, it's easier to de-arc on the VAX. I also found dearcing on a floppy-based system, particularly if there is only one drive, to be a painful experience. You need VMS ARC and VMS CVTARC, which somebody posted to this conference a long time ago. You can get them from: PRNSYS::DUA1:[LOMICKAJ.UTILITIES]CVTARC.EXE,ARC.EXE. Install both as foreign commands, then CVTARC U filename will convert a file that has been uploaded with KERMIT into a file that can be used by VMS ARC. CVTARC V filename will convert a file that has been extracted from an archive into a file that can be downloaded by KERMIT, using SET FILE TYPE BIN. The "U" format is a STREAM_LF file, which is not understood by either VMSSWEEP, KERMIT, or XMODEM, but is used ARC. The "V" format is a variable length 512 byte record, which is understood by VMSSWEEP (so I'm told), KERMIT's SET FILE TYPE BIN, and my own transfer protocol for the ST. I don't know about XMODEM, since I've never gotten XMODEM on the Atari ST to work for me.

It is usually preferable to download ARCs because they resolve problems with files being padded and they are usually smaller than the originals. If you want to download a few files from a large arc, on vms you can de-arc the files you want and then create a new arc with only them. Then download it. Paul
2341.5 | watch out for the file renaming with VMS ARC | STAR::ROBINSON | Fri Mar 10 1989 11:22 | 8
I have taken apart a few arc files on the VAX and reconstructed them in smaller arcs using the VMS ARC. One catch though - VMS ARC will rename a file such as foo to foo. by adding a . at the end. You may have to rename it again on the amiga. Dave |
