2335.0. "Another game port question" by CAM::ARENDT (Harry Arendt CAM::) Tue Mar 07 1989 23:28

    I have been lookinginto the game port capabilies and it seems that
    the capabilities of the ports is limited by the game port types
    supported in the operating system. I have the "ROM kernel Reference
    Manual: Libraries and Devices" Fourth printing Dec 1986 and it
    states that;

    Page 346;

    There are currently three different legal controller types: mouse,
    absolute joystick, relative joystick and no controller.

    Page 347:

    As of this wrting, there is no direct system software for proportional
    Joysticks or proportional controllers.

    1. Is a proportional Joystick an IBM or Apple type joystick which
       reports position based on a varible potentiometer?

    2. If so has such support been added?

    If all this is true Then it should be possible to create two
    proportional joysticks with 5 buttons each.

    Thanks in advance

    Harry

    If joysticks work the same way as Radio Controlled model sticks,
    I believe proportional joysticks would work something like a mouse.
    The further over you push the joystick, the faster your pointer
    moves in that direction. (Oops, waitaminute... that's called
    exponential joysticks on RC. Somebody jump in and help me here.
     Does this sound right?)

    Earlier in this notes file there was a discussion of how to modify
    an IBM compatible proportional joystick to work with the Amiga.
    If I remember correctly this would work with Jet (or maybe it was
    Flight Simulator II). Anyhow only a very few programs will use
    this type of stick. I wish more software would support these.
    Especially games. It's sometimes difficult to get a "discrete"
    joystick to go down the diagonal.

    Proportional does mean "analog" right???
