2333.0. "DEPCA and A2000" by NOBHIL::BODINE_CH () Tue Mar 07 1989 16:13

Has anybody successfully installed a DEPCA board in one of the A2000's
    IBM slots and run PCSA?

I think we (DEC) only officially support the IBM PC and some COMPAQ
models for use with the DEPCA card.

I assume you did this with the Bridgeboard?

I'm impressed it works. I'll have to read up on
the bridgeboard!

Is that right? I thought and have been told that the XT only is
out and that the AT has not even been officially announced.

Yes, that is right. The AT-Bridgebord is prod. here in Germany.
So it is no problem to by it.
BTW,this Card is an fantastic thing including the new Janus-software.
ie Amouse --> You can take your Amiga-Mouse as a MS-Mouse,
You can boot the AT from an Amiga-Part.
Awrite and Aread works very fast

Re: .9

The AT bridgeboard started shipping in the US last week. Expect your
favorite dealer to have some to sell real soon now.

The was announced by Commodore at AmiExpo.

Re: .11

Unfortunately, the price of the AT bridgecard wasn't known by the Commodore
speaker (the woman in charge of Commodore Software Development). She
forgot to get a price list before attending the conference. Someone
in the audience claimed to know a price: I don't remember the number, but
I think it was between $1000 and $1500.

Other news was that Commodore had completed their initial production run
on the Amiga 500 hard disk/memory "slap on the side" expansion unit. No
problems were found in the first production run, and so Commodore should
be producing that addon in great numbers fairly soon.

The AT bridgecard ships with the new Janus software. This software will
soon be offered in an "upgrade package" (similar to the 1.3 update) at
dealers to owners of the XT bridgecard.

I would appreciate if someone could check with their local vendor in the
U.S. this week and post the price for the AT bridgecard in their area.

I spoke to a couple of the local dealers here in Calgary on the weekend and
while they indicated the AT bridgecard was available, they were not going
to stock any due to the price. It seems that the Commodore recommended list
price is 2,500 Canadian. This is about 1,900 U.S. and is totally out of
line with the rest of the market, I can by an entire AT Clone with hard drive
for about 2,000 Canadian.

The dealers said that Commodore has not told them when the new Janus
software upgrade for the XT bridgecard would be available but not to expect
it for another couple of months. I hope there pricing of this is a little
more realistic.

I was at The Memory Location this weekend and asked about the AT board.
The thought that the list price was going to be around $1500, with the
street price down around $1200-$1300. I said the same thing to them,
you can just about buy a whole system for that kind of money, and for
$2000 you can buy a 80386 system. I also think it s*cks to make us XT
bridgeboard owners wait a couple of months to get the new Janus software,
given how bad the current stuff is. Of course I also think it s*cks that
I bought an A2090 controller to find out later I would need an A2090A
to do autoboot! There was a rumor about a daughter board for the A2090
to make it autoboot, but that has changed to a whole board. Ie, you buy
this board and put it in with your A2090 for autoboot. I mean, waste
a whole slot for that!

I like the Amiga, but I don't like Commadore.

but isn't that kind of pricing consistent with the pricing they
used for the XT bridgeboard when it first came out?

Sure you aren't buying a box, power supply, keyboard, etc., but
you are getting an unique AT - one that can coprocess with the
amiga and not take up the space of two pcs on your desk. Pretty
flimsy argument, but then what competition do they have for something
offering those features? There are 3rd party 68020 cards, ever
see a 3rd party amiga bridgeboard? Why is it that 3rd party
bridgeboards are available for the MAC II, but none are available
    for the amiga?

I assume many companies are capable of implementing an ibmpc on
a card, the tricky part is interfacing with the amiga OS.

Is there any market for an AT-on-a-card that doesn't talk to the
amiga side and requires a graphics card/monitor?

2333.16I tried a DEPCA with AT bridgeboard with no luck CANIS::RIESFrank W. Ries Jr.Fri May 19 1989 19:2116
Manfred, I recently tried to get a rev E DEPCA to work on my 2000 with AT
bridgeboard with no luck. If I installed it with jumpers W7 and W8 removed,
the DEPCA would come up with an error 86, and the JANUS software would not
work. In fact, no matter what combination of jumpers I tried, I could not
get the JANUS software to work. It would claim that the handler was loaded,
but if I tried to do any disk i/o, the bridgeboard would hang. I did not
try running DECnet-DOS, since if I could not use the JANUS software at the
same time its a lose. Were you able to run the JANUS software without any
problems while running the DEPCA?

It almost seems that the bridgeboard is interfering with the DEPCA window
no matter where it is located.

Any ideas?
