2311.0. "Farewell fellow Amigan ..." by HPSTEK::MYEE (Care about Ecology? Call 800-225-5333) Thu Mar 02 1989 13:44

							March 2, 1989

	Amigan,

This is my last week at DEC. I have accepted a job at the Open
Software Foundation (OSF) in Cambridge, MA. I will be working in the
User Environment Group responsible for the development of OSF/Motif.
OSF/Motif is the OSF windowing system based on DECwindows (VMS) and
XUI (Ultrix). They tell that I will be working on the style guide
for OSF/Motif. I won't find out exactly what I will be working on
until I get there. My last day at DEC is Friday - March 3, and I start
at OSF on Monday - March 6.

The DEC Amiga community and this Amiga notesfile have made my
owning an Amiga computer a great experience. I can not imagine how
other Amiga owner can do without this kind of support (better than
CBM). I will sorely miss all of you who have helped me get started.
I have returned the favor by helping others in the Amiga experience
(my younger brother is getting an Amiga soon). I think that this
notesfile is one of the DEC fringe benefits that I will really miss.
	Keep the bits flying!

My career plan is to return to DEC in about 1-2 years after
getting OSF experience (DEC has committed to OSF compliant X windows
and UNIX). So, I will see you in the future, but in the meantime I
hope to keep in touch. I can be reached at:

	The Open Software Foundation
	11 Cambridge Center
	Cambridge, MA 02142
	(617) 621-8700	<OSF main number>
DECWRL::"[email protected]"	<I think this will be working March 9>

I will send an updated phone number and Enet address after I
start at OSF. I will miss you all. Feel free to call me anytime
	or send mail.

						Sincerely,

						Michael Yee

I have been working for DEC for about 4 years and I am
surprised at the amount of waste generated. I see otherwise normal
people print out 500+ pages of a dump, source code, or mail that
will only be read once at work, and then thrown away. But, it is in
the cafeteria that I see the greatest waste at DEC. I see people
using Styrofoam trays (sometime TWO trays) to hold their bagged
lunches and drink. What a waste! I have NOT used a Styrofoam tray in
a year. And, I will like to challenge you to do the same, not for
me, but for our environment and for the environment that we leave
	behind for our children.

	So to summarize:

	1.	Please, do NOT print large file (i.e. dumps, source,
documentation), unless it is absolutely necessary.

	2.	Please, distribute memos electronically whenever
possible. (This is the age of networks and workstation.
Let's use these resources to their full potential!)

	3.	Please, recycle all the paper that you print.

	4.	Boycott Styrofoam products (i.e. Styrofoam coffee
cups, trays, etc.). Styrofoam production releases
fluorocarbons into the atmosphere, and Styrofoam
products NEVER decay (Remember, your lunch tray will
still be around when you have long gone). I know that
this is difficult since Tobin cafeteria does not give
you much of a choice. But, here are some hints:

		a. bring and use a personal coffee cup.
		b. use fiberglas trays in the cafeteria.
		c. use the Styrofoam trays only when necessary.
		d. never use 2 trays. (If you need 2 trays, then you
really have too much food. 8*)

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.	=Mike Yee=

  * Some fun facts:
Extracted from the Boston Herald, 11/19/88

"Perhaps if people knew how long it takes for some of the
"litter" to decompose, they would think twice before tossing
any kind of litter out of their car windows. Litter cleanup
in our national parks alone costs taxpayers $15 million per
    year."

Time it takes litter to decompose:

    Paper 2-5 months
    Orange peels 6 months
    Milk cartons 5 years
    Filtered cigarettes 10-12 years
    Plastic bags 10-20 years
    Leather shoes 25-40 years
    Nylon cloth 30-40 years
    Plastic containers 50-80 years
    Aluminum 80-100 years
    Plastic foam NEVER

  * Some more fun facts (from camping):
Aluminum cans & flip tops tabs: 80 - 100 years (longer if
                                                submerged in fresh H2O)
Vibram soles (hiking boots): 50 - 80 years, min.
    Film: 20 - 30 years
    Polyurethane: 10 - 30 years
    Wool clothing: 1 - 5 years
    Fecal matter: 1 - 4 weeks
    Human Body: 1 - 3 months

Plutonium: its 1/2 life is 24,390 years.

    I agree ,

We rent the Earth from our Childrens Children......

    Never forget.

and , by the way WE within DIGITAL are on the right way ...
for example We aren't using FKCW Flour...... Sprays anymore
we ( CLO Germany ) recycle nearly anything Paper , Metal ,
    Plastik , and so on.
Nothing ( nearly ) will be thrown away for nothing ....

Not perfect but better than nothing.

So , good luck , and don't forget Tomorrow Future is Past...
