2304.0. "ANOTHER NEOPHYTE - DOWNLOADING ??" by STING::KNOWLES () Wed Mar 01 1989 16:26

    I am trying to download from the VAX to my AMIGA with no luck with
    non-text files (yes, another one of those file transfer neophytes!)
    At home I have a public domain file transfer program called STARTERM.
    It has a pulldown memu section and a KERMIT section (using CLI
    command). Verbiage in the files indicates that this is a "Wecker"
    product -- FYI.

    I have been able to download a text file using KERMIT but unable
    to download non-text (ie., PACMAN.ARC which I got from "TAPE::USER1
    [amiga.arc]"). Yes I set both the AMIGA KERMIT and the VAX KERMIT-32
    to file type binary. What comes back is a bunch o Q% on the AMIGA
    monitor but no file transfer.

    Read thru AMIGA notes and get some hints: ARC, ZOO, KERMIT, XMODEM.
    After further reading on those subjects I am still left with my
    neophyte definitions:
       ARC = something you learn in geometry
       ZOO = a place to house animals for humans to poke at
       KERMIT = name of a famous frog

    BUT I persevered and downloaded (from TAPE::USER1) CVTARC.EXE and
    CVTARC.DOC to my VAX. Looks like I am the right track --> just
    need to perform a "CVTARC.EXE V" on the VAX PACMAN.ARC and I will
    be able to download to AMIGA with KERMIT and use ARC.EXE at the
    AMIGA end to de-arc the PACMAN for local running. What happens
    -- when I Do the CVTARC, VAX does not run but instead gives me a
    "unrecognized command verb" response.

    Can anyone help me?? I feel like I am getting close and there appears
    to be a lot of neat AMIGA material on "TAPE::USER1".

    Help would be much appreciated.

2304.1A Hint...LEVERS::PLOUFFSemipro SemiologistWed Mar 01 1989 16:496
    To get CVTARC to run, try:

    		CVTARC :== $YOUR_DISK:[YOUR.DIRECTORY]CVTARC

    where YOUR_DISK:[YOUR_DIRECTORY] is the full directory path to the
    place you keep CVTARC.EXE. The leading dollar sign is important.
2304.2Here is one hint.STAR::ROBINSONWed Mar 01 1989 17:1321
> -- when I Do the CVTARC, VAX does not run but instead gives me a
>    "unrecognized command verb" response.

I think this is because you need to define CVTARC as a foreign command:

$ cvtarc:==$disk1:[knowles.amaiga]cvtarc.exe

I have definitions like this for all of these strangely named programs in
my login.com

As for KERMIT, I like to use the SERVER option of the VAX followed by the
KERMIT get on the AMIGA. It seems to work nicely with the VT200 emulator, which
might be a good file to download early on.

By the way, as I recall, downloading PACMAN and then getting it running can be
difficult for a "neophyte". If you are already frustrated by downloading,
trying to figure out the disk organization etc. may be dangerous to your health.
There are notes in this file that explain the requirements though.

Good luck
Dave
2304.3ANOTHER QUESTION FROM "NEOPHYTE"ONFIRE::KNOWLESFri Mar 03 1989 08:5614
Thanks for the tip on how to get CVTARC.EXE to work. I was able to
    convert PACMAN.ARC with it.
    Another question: When I download the ARC'D PACMAN to my AMIGA,
    how am I going to be able to DE-ARC it? I have downloaded the ARC.EXE
    program from "TAPE::USER1" and have converted it to an ARC file
    BUT after I download it to the AMIGA how am I going to de-arc it
    since it itself is ARC'd?? Or can I download it as a ".EXE" file?

    I have looked through the directory of STARTERM (the comms program
    I am using on the AMIGA) and have not seen anything that looks like
    an ARC.EXE file.

    There is obviously an easy answer but it escapes me.

2304.4ARC.EXE for VAXAYOV28::ATHOMSONC'mon, git aff! /The Kelty ClippieFri Mar 03 1989 11:188
    The file ARC.EXE you have is the VAX version of arc which, needless
    to say, won't run on ami. Yes you can download executables, the
    main reason for using arc files is convenience (ie.d/l one file
    instead of 20) and time (arc has compression routines built in)
    Have a look around norse:: or tape:: the amiga version of arc should
    be around somewhere. If not, I'll upload it over the weekend.

    You can download ARC.EXE for the Amiga directly in binary format. ARC.EXE
    is cleverly written so that you don't have to worry about stripping
    off extra padding.

2304.6How about a complete solution?APACHE::MYERSTue Mar 27 1990 15:0625
    Rather than starting yet another note on down/up loading, I thought it
    would be best to just continue this note. I too am a neophite Amiga
    user who is interested in moving files back and forth between my A500
    and my VAX at work. Could someone please describe the tools that are
    required on the VAX and the Amiga (and how to use them) in order to get
    files back and forth between the two computers. For example:

    	"You need files X, X, and X in your VAX account and
    	 Y installed on you VAX. You will also need XXXX and
    	 YYYY for your Amiga. To get files for the VAX to your
    	 Amiga do THIS, THAT, and THE OTHER THING. To get files
    	 from your Amiga to the VAX do THE OTHER THING, THAT,
    	 and THIS."

    I know this has been discussed elsewhere, but I'll be darned if I can
    find it now. It would be really nice for a new user to have one note
    to refer to which describes at least one COMPLETE solution to down/up
    load questions. Of course pointers to other notes are usefull and
    welcome.

    PS. One of the noters in this conference has sent me a PD VT200
    emulator. My system is an Amiga 500, 1meg, external (2nd) floppy
    Scholar modem, LA75, and Amiga 1084 monitor.

OK, I was a neophite once but have (to my satisfaction) sorted it all out..

On your VAX have the following S/W

SZ.EXE & RZ.EXE - this will allow Zmodem Upload and download
KERMIT.EXE - this will allow kermit upload and download

Depending where in the world you are I recommend FTSV as well - this will
perform a copy from WJG, NORSE or TAPE of items of interest with an auto-restart
should a failure occur.

On the AMIGA.

I started off by modifying the BASIC terminal program of the extras disk to
allow a very very simple download of a very basic Kermit implimentation.

Using this, I Downloaded VT100 program

The VT100 program has Kermit protocols built in, so you can download more
(I recommend VLTjr because it has a good terminal emulation and it can use
Zmodem).

Once VLTjr is on your system, you are laughing, cause you are now set to do
anything.

Ok If you are using VLTjr to download a file do the following..

Log into VAX
(I assume SZ is set up as a 'foriegn command' ($ SZ=="$directory:SZ.EXE )

enter SZ filename   c/r

Lo and behold VLTjr will recognise the initiate sequence, and recieve the file
on the AMIGA.

I suggest that you get the following files for the AMIGA of the public locations

ARC - to de-arc a file
ZOO - to de-zoo a file
LHarc to de-LHarc a file

(VMS versions of ZOO and ARC exist so you can look in the file on the VAX).

If using Kermit, you may need the vms program CVTARC.EXE to mung the file
prior to downloading it.

    Eric,

    There is a simpler and cheaper way of doing this, and you never have to
    use the phone!

    Just find a ***station within the office, whether it be a VAX or DEC.
    It must have a 3 1/2 inch disk drive. Get SoftPC on it (kit location in
    note 3419.*)

    Once you've set up a shared directory within SoftPC called, for example
    e:, you can just FTSV stuff across to this directory and then use
    SoftPC do a straight copy from e: to a: Then you carry the disks home
    and use CrossDOS or the PCCOPY patches to allow you to read and copy
    the MS-DOS disks.

    ONLY FLAW: Someone must send you the zoo progs, the tryware version
    of CrossDOS and/or the PCCOPY patches!!

    Greg (this is discussed in 3419)
