2293.0. "ST506 Pinouts?" by AKOV11::SMITH (Ed...) Tue Feb 28 1989 23:43

    Okay, here goes my first Amiga question...

    I have a second ST225 that I would like to run of my 2090A controller.
    I already have used the internal space on my first drive. have
    this second drive currently mounted and poweredin a case. I think I
    have two options:

    1. Build a custom ST506 cable to mount the drive externally. The
       physical part of this is not a problem as I have some cable,
       connectors and have build cables before. What I lack is the
       ST506 pinouts. The 2090A manual gives the SCSI but not the ST506.
       Anyone out there have this pinouts?

    2. Convert the drive to SCSI with an Adaptek 4000 something. What
       is this converter? How many ST506's will it handle? About how
       much and who sells it? Any information welcome.

    Thanx,

I'm in a course right now, but if you mail me on WJG::GUINEAU
I can photocopy a page in a spec and mail it to you.

2293.2ST506 pins...AKOV11::SMITHEd...Thu Mar 09 1989 16:157
    Thanx John,

      I recieved the pinouts you sent today. I hope to build a custom
    cable this weekend and add another 20MB.

2293.3HD add-on CompleteAKOV11::SMITHEd...Mon Mar 13 1989 09:2325
     Well, I've finished adding my 2nd HD to my 2090A. Using the
    pinouts for ST506 that John supplied I built a custom cable with
    DB25 connectors. It turns out of the 54 (34 pin and 20 pin)
    lines only 22 of them are signals and the rest are grounds. This
    allowed me to put everything on a 25 pin connector (3 grounds).
    I mounted the ST225 in an RX180 case I bought for $25. After
    stripping the RX drives out and rearranging the power supply the
    drive fit fine. Another nice feature is this allowed me to chain
    the 120AC (plug the amiga into the RX180 case, RX180 into wall)
    since the RX180 case was designed to chain 2 together.

      Since it seemed a waste to not use the RX drives I have done the
    modification to run them on the Amiga floppy connector. The real
    trick here is to find a DB23M connector to build the cable. Everyone
    has DB25's but no one seems to have a 23 pin. Any ideas where to
    look?

      I also picked up WB1.3 on the weekend and am starting some timimg
    measurements on the second HD under the FFS. I hope to find the
    best combination of INTERLEAVE, MAXTRANSFER, BUFFERS and then complete
    the upgrade.
