Steve here's the information I received from Spirit.
The HDA506 is a card that you plug into the side connector
of a A1000 or A500 that will allow you to use a IBM pc type
of interface (ST506 bus).
Currently it support only 2 manufacturers of interface
Western Digital and another one but, I cannot remember the name.
You can use either a MFM or RLL controller.
Each controller support 2 drives.
It comes in a metal enclosure that match the color of the Amiga.
You can buy a ROM that will autoboot.
To make the whole thing work you have to have :
1- HDA506 (about $250.00 us)
2- ST506 interface ( $70.00 us)
3- Drive to interface cable
4- A power supply for the drive and HDA/interface combo
5- A ST506 drive (RD5X).
If I want to sumarize it look like a fancy "WEDGE"
Hubert.

2265.2 | | HPSTEK::SENNA | | Thu Feb 23 1989 14:17 | 12 |
| Steve,
I asked this question several months ago and did some shopping
around. After looking at ALL posibilities I bought the C-Ltd contoller
with the OMTI adapter for $230 directly from C-Ltd. The HDA-506
method is more expensive. The C-Ltd people can be a pain to work
with as seen in other notes, but after I finally got the card and
worked with John Bernard to wade through the IDIOTIC documentation,
its great. Pretty darn fast too! The OMTI is faster than the Adaptek.
By the way, The price was for an RLL version.
You may want to talk to John as he has had lots of experience and
has used different kinds....(You out there John!!!)

Thanks for your help.
I would like even more info...
I have the possible to get an RD54-DB and would like to find
the best way to connect it to the AMIGA...
The drive has a 50-way D-type connector and I know that it is a
ST506 type of drive and will need the correct type of controller.
Is there an AMIGA to ST506 controller? Will it allow the use of
external memory? Does it have it own power supply? I seem to be getting
confused between all the different types packages.
I have also noticed that We in England don't have as many good hardware
store where We can see all the different types of controllers , disks
etc...
Or can anybody prove me wrong...
Can HPSTEK::SENNA please answer with which C-Ltd Controller he used
what box, boxes etc ...How did you conect it up.
Anybody know what CHIPS are required on the Spirit mem boards.
Do they need a larger power supply if so where can I get a 240 Volt
50 Hz version...
Regards
Steve Goldstein

| Steve,
I know it's not in ENGLAND :-) but I would recommend you contact
The Amiga Centre Scotland
4 Hart Street Lane,
Edinburgh
Tel. 031-557-4242
They are very knowledgeable and very helpful and an EXCELLENT mail
order service. They have a lot of hardware including Hard disks,
controllers and expansion memory in the shop. Best of all why don't
you save up a few quid, jump on a train and come up to Gods country
and visit the shop (but either bring lots of or leave it all at
home.)

2265.5 | Some info on Insider 500 | DPDMAI::ANDERSONA | | Fri Feb 24 1989 23:34 | 29 |
| The Spirit Insider-500 uses 256K Drams. The info I have says 150ns
chips are ok. It is Auto configurable unless you have it fully populated
with 1.5 MB then you have to add the memory by running a separate
program. The power is .65 Amps max fully populated. This is from
the installation manual. It states that the Amiga power supply
gives you 4.3 amps and then the following info.
Mother board (only) 1.69 Amps Max
A-501 Expansion 0.40 Amps Max
1010 Ext. Disk Drive 0.50 Amps Max
Spirit 1.5 MB W/TC 0.65 Amps Max
Total 3.24 Amps Max
Add any other devices you have. Also I wrote to Spirit and sent
them $3.00 asking questions and they returned a floppy with
installation information and some PD programs. But it answered
all my questions.
They also have a new module that can have up to 2mb and fully
autoconfigurable. The SIN 500-2 it uses 256X4 Drams. $294.00 with
0K. .5Mb of 256X4 drams are $160.00
I plan on ordering a insider 500 soon. I will have to give my old
Rainbow a Lobotamy.

2265.6 | Help on RD5X-BA ?? | DPDMAI::ANDERSONA | | Fri Feb 24 1989 23:58 | 26 |
| As for the question on the RD5X-DB. How much room do you have between
the top of the drive and the case? Your best bet is to use a SCSI
Host on the Amiga. Such as the C. Ltd SCSI 500. (They say they will
have an Auto booting version out soon but they have been saying
this since last Oct.). From this device you can have a fifty pin
ribbon cable for the SCSI bus up to six meters. This must go to
a SCSI to ST506 disk controller such as the Adaptec 4000A. This
card will fit right on top of the drive. But you will have to
manufacture some sort of slide. I finnally used some old perf board
from a local electronics stor and a few old plasti slides from
an old PDP11/34 card cage. The perf board was screwed to the sides
of the drive extending about an inch above it 6/32 screws. then
the plastic slides were mounted on the inside edge horizontally above
the drive and the Adaptec slid in. The Adaptec cables to the drive
with a 36 pin cable and a 20 pin cable. Your fifty pin D connector
will probably have to be removed to make a hole so you can run the
fifty pin SCSI bus cable into the Adaptec. You will also need about
1 inch of clearence above the drive under the top of the drive case.
The C. Ltd SCSI Host need approx 250ma from the Amiga power supply.
The Adaptec can get its power from the drive box. You will need
to purchase a drive power "Y" adpater.
Hope this helps.
