2248.0. "Two Player Games" by R2ME2::MULLEN (Dan Mullen, Run-Time Libraries.) Thu Feb 16 1989 16:54

One thing I take into consideration when purchasing a game is whether or not
it can has "two (or more) player mode". I was really looking forward to
Gauntlet because I had heard it would support multi-players in cooperative
rolls (rather than opposing rolls).

What are your choices for the best two player games?

    I think TV sports is the best game for two-player games. I think
    it is the best because you can be on the same team instead of against
    each other.

    Firepower is good but that is a non-cooperative (you against him/her)
    two-player game. What's nice is that it is done split screen so you
    both play happily at the same time and even has one-player and modem
    modes.

    Plutos is a good fast 2 player cooperative game. However I agree
    that there are not enough good two player games out there. I will
    no longer buy a game if it is not two player.

    Also Earl Weaver Baseball is a good game.

2248.4Bubble Bobble, ZoomLOWLIF::DAVISThat's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE!Fri Feb 17 1989 16:3811
If you want something different than the 'ol shoot-em-up, try Bubble Bobble
by Taito. You're a "cute little" dinosaur that has to blow bubbles on the
bad guys and then pop them.

Also, Zoom is not too bad. Warning: This one is by Discovery Software and
is copy protected out the ... shutter. The two-player mode is kinda rotten
because if one guy dies, it makes you both start that level over. It's a
pain if you play with someone that dies a lot.

    I guess I'd have to consider Falcon to be one of the better 2 player
    games...heck, in the single player mode it's challenging enough!!

    Also, there are the Tele-War games......basically a two-player (via
    modems, etc.) set of "Avalon Hill" like board games.

2248.6Add these to the listEVER11::HOSFORDTue Feb 21 1989 10:327
    The is also Time Bandit, Enerald Mine, Marble Madness, and Leatherneck.
    In all of these you are on the same side. Emerald Mine is like Bolder
    Dash, Time Bandit, and Leatherneck are shootem up types, and Marble
    madness is like wierd.

    I bought Datastorm this weekend because I loved to play defender.
    The game is good but not as playable as I would like. It is too
    fast! Can you believe it? Actually with a slight modification of
    the control parameters and some different joystick stuff it would
    be a little better. Maybe the new gravis joystick would be better?
    This is definitely a bang-bang shoot-em-up.

    A few facts;

    	1. The up/down motion responds very fast however with the joystick
           in the level position the ship tends to sink by itself which
           is a pain because it will not hover and rises and sinks to fast.

        2. Direction is controlled by the right and left of the joystick.
           This is not as good as having a reverse direction and a thrust
           button or a reverse direction and have the current direction
           be thrust and the reverse be braking. The problem with the
           current scheme is that when I stopped forward motion there
           was a marked tendency to reverse direction, this made shooting
           at a fast moving target very difficult. However shooting in
           both direction was easy.

    	3. The fast targets were killers.

    	4. Two player modes were fun. There were 4 modes.
           a. One player.
           b. Two players alternate with one joystick.
           b. Two players alternate with two joysticks.
           b. Two players together.

        5. I was unable to back up the game using marauder.

  Overall I would give this game;

        10 - Graphics & Sound
         7 - Joystick motion.
         8 - Overall play.
