Synthia creates instruments and sounds in IFF. So there's no problem to
use them with Sonix.

| Would it be .ss or .instr at the end of the instrument?

2213.3 | .instr | LOWLIF::DAVIS | That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE! | Tue Feb 07 1989 19:35 | 3 |
| I believe it would be .instr for the file extention.

| I have tried that and when I try to load it from Sonix it says"
can't load instrument from disk".

2213.5 | IFF? | WJG::GUINEAU | | Fri Feb 10 1989 07:50 | 25 |
| The problem is that while they all use IFF, they don't all use the same
IFF *FORM* chunks.
I believe:
Sonix uses FORM.SMUS
DMCS uses FORM.8SVX
Both are perfectly valid IFF formats. And both fully documented in the IFF spec.
However, both are not identicle. And if Sonix doesn't know how to read 8SVX
files (which it can't, right?) then it can't read DMCS "IFF" files. Like
wise if DMCS can't read SMUS files (which I think it can) it won't load them
either.
In addition, I don;t think Sonix instrument files (sampled sound) are IFF.
There are 2 Sonix instruments: Those ending in .SS and those in .INSTR
I think the .SS (Sampled Sound) are not IFF, the .INSTR are.
The moral of the story? Just because it's IFF, doesn't mean the program
understands the particular IFF chunks (FORM in this case) used!

2213.6 | ARP for 1.3? | WJG::GUINEAU | | Fri Feb 10 1989 07:53 | 8 |
| Anyone heard the latest on ARP for 1.3? I hear mention on USENET that
MicroSmiths is shipping it with TxED (sp?).
There is a file on CGOU01::AMNEW: named ARP13.ARC. Is this the 1.3 ARP stuff
from TxED?

2213.7 | Sonix disk mounted? | LOWLIF::DAVIS | That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE! | Fri Feb 10 1989 10:38 | 6 |
| When you try to load the instrument, is your Sonix disk in a drive?
Sonix uses overlays and if it can't get to the program disk that can
cause the "Can't load instrment from disk" even if it is a good .instr
file.

2213.8 | I might use the synthia disk for PD games | GUCCI::HERB | | Fri Feb 10 1989 17:44 | 9 |
| RE .7
I would first load a .instr file from sonix and then try to load
a snythia instrument. It still does not work.
What is Synthia supposed to be used for?

2213.9 | try it by the book | ANT::JANZEN | Mr. MSI ECL Test | Sun Feb 12 1989 19:58 | 22 |
| I love notesfiles for their half-guesses and spitballing.
from the Synthia manual, page 6-29:
"Sonix:
"To save an instrument for Sonix you must save the instrument in
a directory called "Instruments." The name must also have a ".instr"
suffix. For instance, if you wish to save an instrument called
"Bass Guitar" for Sonix, you would save "Bass Guitar.instr" in
the "Instrument" directory on the disk you will be using for
instruments.
"When you load the instrument into the Sonix synthesizer, Sonix
will tell you it is an IFF file and plot the sound for you. If
you save it again, Sonix will convert the Synthia instrument into
a sampled sound format (.ss extension) and you will be able to use
Sonix to modify the sound in real time as it is played by Sonix.
In this way you have the best of both worlds! Synthia generated
instruments playing in the Sonix sampled sound format sound even
better and more realistic. **Refer to your Sonix manual for more
information.**"
but I have never done this...

2213.10 | DANGER! - More half-guesses and spitballs coming | LOWLIF::DAVIS | That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE! | Mon Feb 13 1989 10:15 | 9 |
| re .8
But was your Sonix disk in a drive when you tried to load the instrument??
Loading an arbitrary .instr file would not necessarily be enough. If you
have one drive, put the synthia instrument in RAM: and try loading it from
there with your sonix disk in df0:. Also, for completeness, if that doesn't
work, zap the file (or type file opt h) and see what FORM the IFF file is.
