2134.0. "Out Run" by BELFST::MCCLINTOCK (Peter) Fri Jan 20 1989 09:10

    I thought I'd start another note for Out Run rather than carry on
    the discussion in the registery note.

  > Where did you get OUT RUN? Everywhere I call says "It's not out yet"

    In a computer shop in Belfast. Out Run for the Amiga has been reviewed
    in some UK Computer Mags so it would appear that it has been released
    in the UK.

    The reviews have indicated that it is a straight forward transfer from
    the Atari ST. I have not seen the ST version, however, a friend who
    has the ST version says that it is fairly slow. I have certainly not
    found the Amiga version it slow although the graphics can be a bit
    jumpy at times.

    The sound track is great ... The title screen (similar to the coin-op)
    appears and a deep gruff voice announces "SEGA presents OUT RUN"
    or some words like that. From then on you have the choice of 4
    different tunes with optional sound effects (engine noise, skidding
    etc).

    The main problem with the game as far as I can see (which isn't
    very far as I can't get beyond the 3rd stage) is lack of variety.
    There isn't anything more to the game except racing round more and
    more difficult tracks with other suicidal drivers getting in the
    way.

     I saw OUT RUN at the softwarehouse in Kalamazoo, Mi. last night.
    They commented that it could have been better as it isn't amigatized,
    but ported from the Sega game system.

     The price was $39.95.

     Software at this place really moves as the cost is generally less
    than what you pay in the larger cities.

sound comming from his room!

How do you select the different soundtracks? I didn't see anything in the
manual about it, and the game has never offered me any choice.

Some earlier note said that there was insufficient time to even get past the
FIRST stage. Do you have 85 time units for your first stage? If so, how did
you get past it? I have run without a crash, although I do downshift on turns
(suggested by manual), yet I can't finish the stage.

Thanks,
Sam

    I think I only started with 70 seconds. I don't have the game anymore
    I got rid of it.

    T = Changes between the various tunes.
    F = Sound effects off
    J = Transfer to Joystick
    M = Transfer to Mouse
    Space = Pause / menu options
    Esc = Restart

    Sound effects off do enable you to hear the music better but the engine
    noise can be helpful to prompt you to change gear when you haven`t time
    to look at the speed/revs.

    The game starts with 85 secs and on a perfect run (no crashes, spins
    or changes down) the first stage can be completed with 14 seconds
    to spare. You appear to get about 70 seconds for the subsequent
    stages and some of the bends require gear changes so you can`t afford
    more than about 1 crash.

    I can get to near the end of most of the 4th stages but have never
    completed them to get on to the fifth. Some friends have managed
    it on the Atari ST and say it`s easy!
