2133.0. "Print driver help!" by HPSCAD::GATULIS (Frank Gatulis) Fri Jan 20 1989 08:48

I'm shopping for a decent printer. I'm condidering the NEC P6
or it's successor (forgotton its name). Question: How do you
go about determining (in advance) that one of the supplied drivers
will work? For example, John Sauter, in another note, mentioned
that he has an NEC P6 an uses the EpsonQ driver.

I'm concerned that unless I buy one of the printers for which
there is a specific driver, I may not be able to use it's full
functionality.

There must be considerations to these print drivers I don't understand.
I have an LA50 hooked up and I was actually surprised that I couldn't
find a standard driver to make the LA50 work in graphics mode. It
seems like an LA50 is a pretty basic printer! I've had very poor
succes trying to use the LA50 even with the LA50 driver for graphics.
I've yet to get a single picture or text for that matter in graphics
mode without it shifting lines on me (don't know what i'm doing wrong!).
It also seems to hang the task quite often if I try to abort in
the middle of printing. Works just fine in draft mode but I want
graphics capability. So again, how does one go about matching the
printer to the driver (aside from calling someplace like the Memory
Location who doesn't seem to carry a large selection of printers).

Any advice would be appreciated.
Frank

2133.11.3 has an NEC P6 driverSAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterFri Jan 20 1989 13:199
In Workbench 1.3 there is a specific driver for the NEC Pinwriter
series. I believe the only difference between this driver and the
EpsonQ driver is access to 360 by 360 dpi mode.

Our closeness to DEC makes the LA50 look like a very common printer.
As far as I can tell, in the home computer world it is totally unknown.
The name of the game for homes and small businesses is Epson
compatibility.

Yes, there is. It's on WB 1.3 and it's called (if I recall correctly) EpsonX.
I may be wrong on the name but I know it's there since I'm using it to drive my
Star 1000 color printer.

2133.4I have problems with colors.FJORDS::ROSARIODon't Panic!!!Fri Jan 27 1989 08:359
I have been using the JX-80 driver to output color. If I use the new EpsonX
driver colors don't print, and the new higher resolution modes don't seem to
work. In the manual they mention something about "old epson"-compatible
printers, and that you might have to use the old epson driver instead.

I would love to be able to use the higher resolution modes, even in B&W.
Does anybody know how to get this working ?

2133.5STAR LC10 anyone?KERNEL::MOUNTFORDMon Jun 05 1989 21:0214
Five months on... I have just purchased a Star LC10-C for my 500.
Workbench 1.3 gives extra drivers but none for Star printers.However
I find that the LC10 emulates the Epson LX-800.

Does anyone know if any of the listed Epson drivers equates to this:

IE. Epson Q
EpsonXOLD
or Epson X As described in V1.3 update.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Richard.
