2113.0. "Any problems with Sony CPD-1303 monitor?" by MPGS::GOGUEN () Fri Jan 13 1989 11:16

    	When I bought my Amiga 500, I purchased a Sony CPD-1303	multiscan
monitor. I've been having problems with the right-edge of the screen.
The top, bottom and left edges of the screen are a nice crisp straight
line. But, the right edge has a distortion to it and is bowed inward
somewhat at the top and bottom. Also the very bottom scan line has
about 5% of it shown up on top of the top scan line. This is also on
the right side of the screen.
Has anyone else bought this monitor and are you experiencing any
    problems?

ps. I'm currently working this issue with Sony, will post any
        significant findings.

2113.11302 has the same problemsAQUA::BISSONDick BissonFri Jan 13 1989 13:0011
I bought the Sony 1302 about 2 months ago and have exactly the symtoms
you describe. At first, I was concerned but it was something I got used
to very quickly and doesn't bother me. My concern was born from some
talk in the MAC notes file about the Sonys having to be adjusted as
soon as they are unpacked but after the adjustment, they are a very
    good monitor.

All in all, I'm very happy with my monitor but I would be interested
in Sonys' response to your inquires.

Is there a source locally (MASS) to see/purchase the Sony 1302/03,
    and what is the difference?

    re .1

At first I felt the same way, "I would get use to it, no big deal".
But, then I got to thinking, Sony makes a high quality product in its
not like I bought some bottom of the line product. And I paid good
money ($650) for a good quality product.
Therefore, I will not compromise and live with this problem, I want
what I paid for. I think any of us who bought these monitors should
demand the same SONY Quality that SONY puts into there other products.
This is one blemish I feel that is just to big to overlook, especially
if you want to run with SETLACE ON or in INTERLACE mode, this seems to
really intesify the distortion. So, I'm going to do what I have to to get
satisfaction and have an enjoyable Computer system at home to work &
play on. I urge anyone else who is experiencing problems with the 1302
or 1303 monitors to call SONY and atleast let them know that you are
unhappy with this defect, even if you plan to keep the monitor. The
more people that make SONY aware the better products SONY will make for
    the Amiga in the future.

I spoke with SONY today, they agree there is a compatibility
problem with the 1302 & 1303 and the Amiga, something to do with the
timing of the signal. Customer Service is suposed to get in touch with
me in the next day or two, to work out how resolve my problem (refund
of money, trade in for different type of monitor, whatever....).
To this point, I am satisfied with the way I have been treated by
the representatives of Sony Corp in helping me with my problem.

Stay tuned.....more info at a later date.....

I've noticed the 5% problem mentioned in .0 on both the Barco and the
VR241 I took home from work.

2113.5Maybe a synch problem?SHIRE::BOERSMgr CECs and Publ Sect DCC EngineeringFri Jan 20 1989 06:4926
This looks like a timing problem with the vertical synch.
I don't know details about this particular setup, but from
some general work I did on Video synchronisation (as a hobby),
I speculate it could be the following:

Just before the vertical synch pulse, a videosignal has 'filler'
pulses in the middle between the horizontal synch pulses. This
allows the vertical synch detector in the monitor to determine
exactly when the vertical synch signal starts. These pulses make
sure that the DC level applied to the vertical synch detector
    stays in a reasonable range.

Some video sources do not have these pulses. Also, if it is an
AC connection with a rather small Cap, the DC level just before
the vertical synch pulse will drift a bit. Result could be that
the vertical synch starts to early, showing some of the picture
content of the last lines on the top of the screen, and unstable
horizontal synch in the last lines of the picture.

Obviously, I cannot judge from a distance if above is the problem.
It would be worthwhile to look at the video signal on a scope.
Showing a full frame at the time, the lowest points of the horizontal
synch pulses should not bend upwards at the end of each frame.
If that happens, increasing the connecting capacitor might help.

2113.6Thanks RobGUMDRP::GOGUENFri Jan 20 1989 07:0818
    Rob,

Thanks for your comments. I don't have much knowledge about the
electronics of monitors. But, I did spend a half day down at the Sony
Service Center in Westwood, MA, working with (more watching) there head
technician on my set-up (Amiga 500/Sony CPD1303). He worked on the
thing for and 1 Hr or so, no luck.
I've also spoken on the phone with either an Engineer or Technician
at Sony Headquarters in NJ and the conclusion was there is some sort of
compatibility problem. As you mentioned in your previous note, it has
something to do with the timing. Apparently they don't feel it is
something that they can fix quickly or inexpensively whichever may be
the case. I'm currently awaiting a phone call for either a refund or
some sort of swap/refund or paymore for another Sony monitor that is
    fully compatible with the Amiga.

2113.7Praises for Sony CorporationMPGS::GOGUENThu Feb 16 1989 14:2832
Well it's finally solved. After many conversations with many
people, starting as far back as November of 88, Sony pulled through and
stood behind the quality of their products and customer satisfaction.
I received in the mail today a check for a full refund of my Sony
CPD1303 Multiscan monitor. The following is a copy of the letter I sent
    to Sony Corp. in NJ.

Dear Clem,

As we discussed on the phone today, I am sending you the purchasing
invoice on the Sony CPD-1303 Monitor. You will be using this to get a check
processed for a refund for the monitor. I will be using the monitor until the
check has been processed. Once the check is processed please contact me and I
will ship the monitor to you. You can contact me during the day time at
(508) 490-7019.

It is unfortunate that the compatibility problem between the Sony
monitor & my Commodore Amiga computer existed. I want to thank you & Sony
Corportation for you service in assiting me with this problem and the final
resolution. I still hold Sony in high regards and am sure we will do
business in the future. Once again thank you for standing behind your product
and seeing that your customers are 100% satisfied.

				Sincerely,

				Paul Goguen
