2082.0. "Disc to video tape question??" by GENRAL::NAUGHTON () Thu Jan 05 1989 20:38

    A friend of mine has been copying his hard disc to viedo tape.
    He tells me his program tells him his error rate and it has
    been higher than he would like. He believes the problem lies
    in the tape, he's using Maxell HGX. Has anyone out there gone
    through the various tapes and come up with a winner?

    Thanks Bill

    A long time ago in a company far, far away, we looked real hard
    at using industrial VCRs as gigabyte backup devices. After some
    mucking about, the read/write engineer concluded that the dropout
    rate of commercial videotape was far too high to use as a backup
    medium without some very complex error correction strategy. The
    implementation of error correction was easy; the problem was in
    getting a VCR to perform fast start/stops and backhitches (retrys).
    Since the human eye can fill in a tremendous amount of bad information,
    you don't notice dropouts (or drop-ins).

    Corvus Systems did (does?) make a system. I don't recall what kind
    of interface they use(d).

2082.2 SCSI VHS BackupDPDMAI::ANDERSONAFri Jan 06 1989 12:439
    I just had one of my customers install a VHS tape backup drive on
    his 11750. All I know about it is that it uses the small VHS tapes
    he claimed that he could purchase tapes from K-Mart so they shouldn't
    be anything special. The unibus interface was a Unibus to SCSI
    bus adapter. I can call him and find out more details if you are
    interestead.

        Thanks Alan. If you get a chance ask him if he has any better
    luck with any certain brand tape.

    Thanks again Bill

    He has had a lot of trouble with this drive. It was replaced 3 times
    for various problems and right now thay are looking into a microcode
    problem on the unibus interface. When it works he liked it. He is
    using Maxwell tapes.
