2026.1 | memory galore | GLDOA::STOUGHTON | INSTALLS-R-US | Tue Dec 20 1988 09:52 | 18 |
| Unfortunatly memory is only on my wish list. But here some information
that might be of some use to you. I currently have a magazine from
Computer Discount in Denver Col. They advertise the exp-1000
unpopulated for 219.98.
This is the good part.......They also have an exp-512 1/2 meg card,
or if your game you can get an exp 8000+ . This is an internal module
allowing 2,4, or 8 meg memory, plus and optional (arn't they all
now a day's). 68010processor or 68881 math coprocessor.
This module is fully compatable with the a501 so......
You can have a grand total of -9- megabyte internal memory!!!!!!!!
happy holiday's

I've seen the exp-1000 with full qmeg for $500 (memory Location)
The Spirit with 512K at $400 (expandable to 1.5Meg) from The Bit Bucket.
Haven't checked with Software Shop yet...

| On a related note, you might want to check out note 2414 in the
IBMPC notesfile (NAC::IBMPC). Bernie Eiben has 1 Mb of 256K, 150ns
rams he salvaged from some old hardware. He has tested them at
10 Mhz and they all passed. $5/chip or 1MB=$150. A real steal so
I don't expect these will last long...

Not bad since the Spirit board is $169 unpopulated!
That would make 1Meg for about $320... Hmmm.
How are 150Ns compared to the 120Ns RAMS?? Noticable ?
What about power? If I were to add the remaining 512K later, would they
also need to be 150Ns? I heard a dealer say people have mixed speeds, but it
doesn't sound safe to me...
Thanks!

| Re: The SPIRIT 1.5 meg expansion memory for the A500 -
A couple things to watch for, they may have been fixed or changed
by now...
The Spirit board plugs into the 68000 socket. The board was long
enough that when the metal shield was replaced, and the cover put
back on the A500, the board had pressure put on it and one end came
out of the socket. This was tried on multiple A500's using multiple
Spirit boards. The boards did have the low profile sockets.
The board had inteference from several capacitors that had to be
layed on their side. Some required resoldering on the A500
motherboard. Not for the weak of heart.
There was a jumper with a clip attached that had to be connected
to one of the pins on the Gary chip. Along with this, an installation
program had to be run (not an autoconfig board).
The metal EMI shield had to be bent out of the way in the rear.
This was in the instructions! Not too impressive.
The memory worked fine but I was not too impressed with the packaging
design.
Byte Box
This uses 256K chips and is configurable in 1/2, 1, 2meg steps.
I used this originally with a couple different disk controllers
with no problems. It is autoconfig and comes with diagnostics.
The only problem is the amount of desk space that is taken up if
you also have a disk controller. This box does not have pass-thru
so needs to be the last device on the bus. A plus is that it is
just the right size to put your 2nd floppy on top of.
I would recommend an add-on box that uses 2000 style memory. This
would give you more options in the way of memory selection as well
as an upgrade path.
My .02 worth...

2026.6 | Santa more memory plz | GLDOA::STOUGHTON | INSTALLS-R-US | Thu Dec 22 1988 11:41 | 9 |
| For what it's worth I talked to a dealer here yesterday who informs
me that there is 2 ram plants just starting up in Korea. The forcast
that he read was that there will be a memory chip glut in about
a year and a half forcing prices to come down dramatically.
So buy enough memory to run Dragon's Lair but hold off on the rest!

A year and a half!!! I'll have an A3000 by then :-)
By the way, I was speaking with a dealer. He said that Commodore is the
largest buyer of RAM in the WORLD!

| Re: .4
>How are 150Ns compared to the 120Ns RAMS?? Noticable ?
No difference at all. 120ns RAM is only faster that 150ns RAM if you
drive it faster. The Amiga accepts 150ns RAM, and effectively uses
all RAM at 150ns.
It is exactly the same situation as is you have a 68000 rated to run at
10 megahertz and you put it on a board with a 8 megahertz clock. The
10 megahertz processor runs at 8 megahertz.
Re: Internal RAM Expansion for the 500
Beware: The standard Amiga 500 power supply is not strong enough to
power a lot of internal RAM. The amount of internal RAM you can
power depends on whether you also have an external floppy.
If you get any expansion device (besides one external floppy) that takes
power from the Amiga 500, BUY A BIGGER POWER SUPPLY. Some of the internal
500 expansion products can smoke your computer if you do not get a
bigger supply. The manufactures of those products have not always
volunteered that information by the way.
I believe that bigger Amiga 500 power supplies run for about $50 to $75.
But since I don't own a 500, I am not a reliable source of information
on pricing.
Personally, I would also worry about heat when adding something like
a 8 meg board internal to a 500. But I don't have any data on the
subject.
