1993.0. "AREXX TRICK" by POLAR::GOSLING (Think KANATA INC.) Wed Dec 14 1988 09:16
Here is an interesting trick for you AREXX users out there (with
AMIGADOS v1.3) - just in case you hadn't realized it yet. I
started thinking of this when I went to bed the other night and
ended up getting up at 2:00 a.m. to try it out.
AM I SCREWED UP OR WHAT!
If you copy/rename RX to EXECUTE (I copied the original EXECUTE to
EXEC first), and set the script bit of the AREXX file (protect
filename +s), simply entering the file name will run the AREXX
program. There are some idiosyncrasies that you will have to live
with such as the file can't end with the normal '.rexx' (unless
you want to type 'filename.rexx').
I haven't had the time to really work on this and I therefore warn
you that there are likely a number of traps associated with this
(things like not being able to run SPAT and DPAT without preceding
them with the EXEC command, and using ICONX scripts come to mind).
I know that establishing an ALIAS for each AREXX program is
probably just as easy and trap free, but I found the above
interesting and thought I would share it with you for what it is
worth. If you are like me, and use AREXX to the exclusion of
normal scripts, you may want to delve into this further.
