1935.0. "Spirit Technology's HDA-506 for the A500 & A1000" by HPSTEK::SENNA () Thu Dec 01 1988 15:45

Does anyone know or has heard anything more than the review in Amiga
World last month, about Spirit Technology's HDA-506 for the 500
and 1000. All I know thus far, after speaking to them is that they
have this adapter that fits on the expansion slot, but takes power
from your drive and allows you to use ST-506 (RD%%) type drives.
They do support autoboot, comes complete with software(what kind
I have no idea), but it only works if you get this additionl card
from the IBM/PC world that fits inside!! Well after getting too
excited the price breakdown for this stuff is...

    		294	HDA-506
    		130	IBM/PC adapter card(???)
    		 50	autoboot rom
    		----
    		474	Total

It seems to me it would be cheaper to get a SCSI controller and
Adaptec 4000 to use with my RD%%!!!

    Just my thoughts!!!

A friend of mine has this up and running now and seems to be pretty
happy with it. He initially had some problems with it that related
to the type of controller that he bought (I beleive this is the
extra card that you are talking about).

The SPIRIT people seemed to be pretty helpful during the whole thing.
In fact, when they determined that his problem was the controller,
they replaced it for him with one that worked. It seems that the
company that made the controller he was using would not release
technical specs to SPIRIT so they were having a hard time supporting
    it.

If you do go this route, call them and ask what type of controller
    you need.

My friend chose this over the wedge because 1) It is enclosed in
a case and 2) It passes the buss.

    Hey this looks interesting...

You'd still need a power supply, fan and box for the drive, right?

Where can you legitimately get your hands on a RDxx Drive?
