1825.1 | I got one... | CSOA1::CURTIS | | Fri Oct 28 1988 15:05 | 12 |
| I just bought one last week...I hooked it up the first time and
it worked fine, next time I hooked it up, I had no display and wound
up taking the Amiga and Amigen back for repair. I think what happened
is I must have shorted some pins together (yes, the power was off),
and must have discharged a cap and it took out my Agnus chip/display
circuitry. Anyway, I used it again and no problems, but I'm nervous
about plugging it into the RGB port now, so be careful! What I want
to do is overlay graphics on video (the only thing you CAN do with
the Amigen) and use it with The Director and other programs to do
video titling/animation and the like. It's not a pro device, but
it works and for my purposes, I think it will be fine.

| The one I have worked fine from the time I plugged it in, in fact
ALL the devices I used with my 1000 and now the 2000 worked right
(touch wood). I was a bit hesitant about using the RGB pass-trough,
as some magazines said that the output was below par, but it was
not. The other thing the magazines said was that the "genlocked"
output was not as sharp as other genlocks, in some respects they
are right, if you try to feed a full amiga graphics screen, with
sharp contrasting colors side by side, the colors will bleed, but
a normal title surimposed on a live video will not, THAT is the
primary purpose of a genlock. All in all a good piece of hardware
at the right price.

P.S. I ordered it from Abel supply, and it was at my door in less
than 3 weeks.

1825.3 | New Genlocks from Commodore | CESARE::ZABOT | Marco Zabot-Adv.Tech.mgr-Turin ACT | Wed Nov 02 1988 10:41 | 40 |
| Well ... GENLOCK is to general term , today.
I used to have an old GENLOCK device ( from INTERACTIVE SW, UK )
connected to my od A1000. Worked well, but the quality of the output
as very poor ( level of signals, etc..) and was not sutable for
broadcasting ( I was helping a friend of mine willing to use it
for cheap ad'ing on local networks).
Lately new devices have been released.
I have now an A2301 PAL GENLOCK from Commodore. ( NTSC version is
A2300 ). This is a half size ( even less :-) board that fits into
the video slot of the A2000. No software is required.
Connections:
Video-IN Video-Out (RCA style)
RGB-out ( connect here your Monitor)
A manual switch allows you to select:
Video-Only Computer Both.
The transparent color is the first of the palette.
Price : ( around 250 $ ,I've been told. I don't pay for this things:
is very nice to have a friend that 'borrow' you these items till
a new version is available !:-)
Another model ( I've not personally seen it ) is a professional
one. The cost is around $ 3,000 but gives you perfect broadcast
quality. This Also is manufactured by Commodore. Don't remember
the type number.
Usage. Title to movies is the first. The most appreciate use is
in golfing. You take a movie of you ( or friend ) swinging the clubs
that playback a frame at a time. With Dpaint you select points (
such as the left ear, the nose, an elbow etcc...) and mark t on
the screen with different color. At the end of the scene we can
see on the monitor the differential of the speed ( we golfer call
it `the timing' ) and the sway of the head ( the worst thing in
the world!! ).
It's a very simple apllication that makes Amiga a beloved computer
by a lot of my friends.
