Thanks for the suggestion, please be aware that I'm in Colorado
so you need to qualify any recommendation with a specific location.
I've read this conference enough that I think the Software Shop
is in Worcester, right? Do you know what their price is on the Micron
board?
With RAM prices so high, maybe I should just forget about the memory
right now and spend a little extra for a hard drive. I'd appreciate
any advice from those of you who have both.

| The Software Shop is also a mail order dealer. I don't remember
the number but it is in the last Amiga World and many others places.
That is why you can mention him even if you don't know the location.
He even ships overseas.

| I have both a hard drive and the larger memory. I started with
only floppies, and added the hard disk when it arrived at the dealers,
a few weeks later. While waiting for the hard disk I used the machine
only for learning---I didn't try to get any real work done in the
absence of a hard disk. I definitely recommend that you get one.
(Of course, having both is best.)

Commodore's 8Meg board with 2M installed is selling for under $700
mail order, and would give you a nice upgrade path..

| Give Creative Computers a call (800) 872-8882. I bought a 2052
there just recently for $449. Moe at the Software shop is getting
quite high at $595. Mail order, 2nd day air will cost about $8-$12.
I always go UPS COD so I don't get caught in the "backorder" loop.
I'd stay away from the Micron boards for the Amiga. I talked to
the factory directly and they said "they are getting out of the
Amiga memory business".
I have both a 2052 and the 2meg Micron. Both work fine. The micron
comes with diagnostics, the A2052 does not.

Thanks for all the suggestions. After a frantic search and a lot
of phone calls to both local dealers and everyone I could find with
ads in AmigaWorld and Amazing, I finally ordered a 2052 from the
Software Hut in Philadelphia for $469, plus $15 for next day UPS
delivery. I got some truly amazing price quotes in my search for
a memory board, the best was probably the $1299 I was quoted for
a Microbotics 8-up with 2 meg installed.

| I've got a stock 1M 2000 with a 50M drive and I'm happy enough
to wait for 1Mx1 part prices to come down. Buy RAM if you can afford
it, but having the HD makes all the difference in the world. So
darn good to have all of my favorite things in one place.
I guess that when the demos start requiring 2M, I'll have to change
my mind. :-)

Probably the only reason in the final analysis that I went for the
memory over a hard drive right now is that there aren't any controllers
that will autoboot yet. Everyone says they will have this RSN but
none of them can do it now. Had this not been the case I'd probably
have picked up a 50 or 65 meg hard drive.
Hopefully by early next year (tax refund time) the autoboot controllers
will be widely available.

I don't know if I'd avoid the Micron board. It's the ASDG memory board
licensed to Micron. ASDG is probably the premier memory board designer
for the Amiga. Memory boards usually work from day one, or they don't.
If you had a problem down the road, ASDG would always be able to repair
it, even if Micron went belly-up :-).
Is Micron getting completely out of the Amiga memory business? The
original story was they were getting out of the Amiga 1000 and 500
memory business (in other words, they were discontinuing their line
of slap on the side adapter boxes that allowed their Amiga 2000
boards to be used with those slot-less machines). I have heard
the rumor that they considering dropping the memory board itself
as well, so I don't know what the story is.

Computer Surplus Store in Milpitas, CA has Micron 2 meg boards
(with 0k installed) for $160 each. Does this mean anything???
The person I spoke with said several of the folks there had
Amigas and watched out for Amiga related stuff - though they rarely
come across any.
