1799.0. "Another downloading question" by RAVEN1::EVERHART () Thu Oct 20 1988 14:36
Hello,
I've been having his really strange problem with downloading
stuff. I live in Clemson, SC, but I work in Greenville. Several
times, I've seen programs floating around in our public domain archives
that I really want for my computer, but I can't afford to make long
distance phone calls and download these at 1200 baud. So, I decided
to try mailing UUENCODED versions of the programs to the Clemson
University Mainframe (IBM 3708) and downloading them from there.
(Free). I have managed to send straight text files, and download
them without any problem. (ie, the source code for the benchmark)
However, every time I've tried to send a UUENCODED file, I can't
seem to decode it properly. Pieces of it are scrambled. When I
run UUDECODE, I get the "Short file" error message, and if it is
archived, I get all the CRC check error messages. Can anyone tell
me what I'm doing wrong? Is my mainframe scrambling characters?
I do know that when using the VT100 mode, the ], !, and | characters
are scrambled, but this shouldn't affect kermit, should it? Can
anyone help me?
- Chris
P.S. Gary, if you're out there, you might know the answer to this
one.

| Try looking for blank lines in the middle of the uuencoded file,
and get rid of them. I had that problem with some old stuff where
somehow in massaging files on the VAX I inserted extra blank lines.
The only blank line allowed in a uuencoded file is the one just
before the 'end' line. Ah, another possibility... delete everything
following the 'end' line.
