Does anybody know of a decoder/depacker/dearcer/de-whatever program for files packed with 'Lempel-Ziv data compression'? A friend who runs a local bulletin board has gotten his hands on some files he claims are packed with this type of data compression. File names all have a .Z extension. ...says Lempel-Ziv is from the Unix world? Anyway, I told him I'd throw a request to the DEC 'Amiga-wolves' to see if they had any ideas. :-) Thanx, John

A program to do Lempel-Ziv compression is on fish disk 6, and an updated version of it is on fish disk 51.

In the MSDOS world there is a program called PKARC that a replacement for ARC that uses Ziz-Lempel-Welch Crunching and squashing. It is written by Pkware Inc. Actually it is two programsd PKARC is the archeiving program and PKXARC is the un-archeiving program. It is generally faster than the old ARC program is. In the latest issue of Amigo Times there was a copy of PKAX which is the Amiga version of PKXARC. The doc file stated that they were planning on a Amiga version of PKARC. It was P.D. for private use and shareware for commercial use in the MSDOS world. PKAX does unarc faster than the old ARC program. But it is still limited to MSDOS file name lengths. Alan
1742.3 | Compress predates ARC and ZOO | NAC::PLOUFF | Cider Season Has Begun | Wed Oct 05 1988 10:33 | 9 |
UNIX 'compress' is an L-Z data compressor which puts out compressed files named 'filename.Z'. The Compress program mentioned in one of the replies is a direct port so should work fine. Also, the programs LZCOMP and LZDCMP in the VMS Toolshed are compatible. ARC's 'squeezing' and 'squashing' functions as well as ZOO's compression method are all variants of the UNIX compress algorithm. Wes

It's embarassing that I can't remember, but I think Steve Drew's backup program, SDBACKUP, uses the L-Z packing scheme, and writes files with ".Z" extensions. If your friend uses this, it could unpack all the files at once, by "restoring"... John O. |
