1642.0. "SIGGRAPH Boston September Meeting" by NAC::PLOUFF (Beautiful downtown Littleton) Wed Aug 31 1988 18:11
Of interest to Amiga image renderers in Massachusetts:
SIGGRAPH/NE September Meeting, 7:30 PM, Wednesday, Sept. 7.
BBN Inc., 70 Fawcett St, Cambridge, MA
"Renderman: The Pathway to Photorealism"
Many people feel that current graphics standards have failed to
address modern customer demands for higher quality graphics,
workstation tools and improved modelling of surface characteristics
in a coherent way. In response, Pixar, arguably the world leader
in computer generated "photorealism," has proposed Renderman as
a proven standard 3-d scene description interface. The intent of
current Renderman software development is to make "photorealism"
available on all graphics workstations. A Pixar II computer will
be available for this demonstration.
This presentation will be given by Thomas Porter, Director of Advanced
Technology for Pixar Inc. [Porter] spent five years on the computer
graphics research staff of Lucasfilm, where he developed the
algorithmic research that lead to the Pixar Image Computer, and
headed up the hardware research team.

[Pixar is the company whose demo film Leo Schwab imitated on Amy
-- see the demo "The Dream Goes Berserk." ACM SIGGRAPH seems to
be a friendly bunch, although their idea of a graphics workstation
is well beyond the Amiga in price and capabilities.]
