I have an Okimate 20 and it's performed well for almost three years
now.
The Okimate has an excellent NLQ font. It actually looks better
than a lot of 24 pin impact printers (the Okimate IS a 24 dot thermal
transfer printer).
Advantages:
* Excellent NLQ output.
* It's about the cheapest color printer you can get.
Disadvantages:
* When printing a bitmap, there are frequently thin white lines on
the sheet, since the carriage advance isn't very repeatable.
* It's slower than hell.
* Black ribbons are about $5/50 sheets
* Color ribbons are about $/12 sheets.
* You can't print on ordinary bond paper. You need glossy paper
specifically made for thermal transfer printers.

1630.2 | problems with ribbon cartridges.. | NWD002::FREEMANRO | FIREWALKER | Tue Aug 30 1988 18:54 | 31 |
| Steve....
I also have an Okimate 20 and agree with Ed's statements in .1.
The only other problem I have encountered has been with the printer
giving me "out of tape" error when I had at least a quarter/inch
left. This tip was passed on to me from a friend who had the same
problem on his Okimate 10.
When you look down on the printer with the cover off, you will notice
a small black post in the lower left hand corner. This post is
connected to a micro-relay and sits behind the the takeup reel of
the ribbon cartridge, when it is inserted. The ribbon cartridge has
a notch cut out to acomodate this post. At some point in time,
there will be enough ribbon on the takeup reel to engage the "out
of ribbon" relay resulting in the aformentioned error. If you will
look at the carttridge, you may find that there is still quite a
bit of ribbon left. IMPORTANT!!! Very carefully shave or file some
plastic off the post until the printer resumes working. You may
have to do this several times to reach the proper shutoff point.
Needless to say this will invalidate your warrenty (90 days usually).
But it is the only fix I know of without tearing the printer apart.
If you shave it to far ( I did ) several coats of clear nail polish
will help rebuild the needed difference. BTW, the results of going
to far are that the printer strips the ribbon off the supply reel
and keeps on trying to print. I'd try to draw you a diagram but
I'm afraid I might confuse you more than help. Just take your time
looking at it and ask your dealer some indepth questions. Good
luck.

1630.3 | STAR LC COLOUR | STOPIT::HERBERT | Herbie goes BANANAS!!! | Wed Aug 31 1988 07:02 | 17 |
| RE. Colour Printer
A friend of mine has been using the new Star LC10 colour printer.
It uses a 4 colour ribbon, but you can also use a normal single
black ribbon (saves a few pennies!). The output is what you would
expect from a sub 300 pound colour printer, it suffers from the
dreaded lines across the page.
On the good side, you do get all the features of the much acclaimed
Star LC10, (automatic paper load, park, 4 NLQ fonts, and a whole
host of other goodies).

1630.4 | And the shades? | SUBURB::PEAKES | Who is this guy anyway? | Wed Aug 31 1988 08:36 | 14 |
| Thanks guys,
Just a couple more questions...
How good are the shades of grey on the okimate & CLC10?
(Or do you just get B&W ?)
I understand from the ads for the Okimate that it 'can produce over
100 shades'. Do these shades spread pretty well over the spectrum
or are they mainly around the 3 ribbon colours and black?
Yours, making headway,
Steve Peake

1630.5 | B&W's ok... | NWD002::FREEMANRO | FIREWALKER | Wed Aug 31 1988 12:08 | 10 |
| Steve, I printed out some B&W stuff for my daughter some time ago
and as best as I can recall, it came out looking pretty good. The
pictures looked a little grainy, but overall not too bad. Again
this was last year, and I havent done much printing since then.
I going to hook up an LA100 and use the LA50 driver that is posted
in these notes. This is for text and the Okimate will simply be
for graphics. I've also heard that you can hook up an Apple printer
to Amy....in fact there is a recent note that relates to that.
My neighbors have one that I'm going to try and borrow but I'm not
sure which printer they have. Good luck in your quest.

1630.6 | Printing with no ribbon. | PUMPKN::SOO | Chong Soo | Thu Sep 01 1988 18:38 | 24 |
| Here is another Okimate 20 owner.
.1 and .2 have very much said what I would say. I could add that
the colour is a lot more vivid than those printed on an impact printer.
For those who would like to try to use up the remaining unused ribbon
when the "out of ribbon" error occurs without doing the modification
.2 suggested, you could also do the following:
Open up the ribbon cartridge, cut and remove the used ribbon from
the left hub but leave enough of the used ribbon so that you can
tape it back on to the now empty hub. Reassemble the cartridge
and you can continue printing with it.
WARNING: After the above modification, the printer can no longer
detect when this particular ribbon cartridge is about to run out
so you have to watch for that yourself.
DISCLAIMER: I found this reply posted after I woke up from me sleep
at my keyboard so I am not sure if I typed it in! :-)
Enjoy.
