I'd try another modem or try the modem on another terminal/computer.
I've got more confidence in my amiga than I do in my Scholar. No
offence intended towards Scholar designers out there :-).

| The Scholar is prone to problems, particularly the power supply.
Check your power supply. Its quite possible that its gone sour as
is the case with most of them.

| I lost a scholar a week or so ago, with similar symptoms (or was
that the Hayes?). Of course, I lost a Hayes on the same day, so
it's probably indicitive of something else.
If you want to sanity check the Amiga, just shove something conductive
between pins 2 and 3 on the rs-232 connector and see if the characters
you type to the terminal emulator echo. (Being in the same position,
this quick test reassured me that it was only the modem that was
bad.)

| I had a similar problem sometime ago, with the same setup as
yours. I swapped cables, modems, 8250's, terminal emulators, etc..
Somebody in this conference suggested checking the telephone plugs.
He was right on the target, I found a burned-out wire in the
plug. It was very dificult to figure out, since voice communications
worked perfectly. I replaced the wall connector and solved the problem.
