| I use an LPS40 and an LN03R. You can probably pick up an LN03R
for a good price through employee purchase. Professional Page is
my Desktop Publishing choice. If you are interested in a sample
of what it can do, copy the following file and print it to an LPS40
or LN03R. (Be sure to print it as a PostScript file, not an ASCII
file!)

do you need a special driver for the lno3r?
Can you use a base lno3r or do you need extras
like memory cartridges?
Did you look at Shakespeare when buying your
software?
Finally, how much memory do you have. The software
recommends 1MB but is that enough. And I have two
3 1/2" disk drives. Will that do the job?

| No additional memory is required for the LN03R. It comes with plenty.
Professional Page is a far superior product to anything else currently
available for the Amiga in desktop publishing. But, if you do not
have access to a PostScript printer, you may be disappointed.
Dunno about printer drivers for the LN03R. I know there is one for
the HP LaserJet which might work. And perhaps the LN03 driver which
is out there might work. I copy my PostScript files to the VAX and
then send them to a local printer queue.

1616.4 | GENERIC printer driver | TLE::RMEYERS | Randy Meyers | Mon Aug 22 1988 16:14 | 20 |
| Re: Driver for LN03R
To do desktop publishing with postscript you do not need any special
printer driver (you can use GENERIC!).
Postscript commands are normal printable, human readable, ASCII text.
(A desktop publishing program producing Postscript output even converts
bitmap graphics into ASCII text.)
Of course, it would be nice to have a printer driver so you can do
printing from Deluxe Paint II to the printer (DPaint will need a
driver that can convert the raster dump to postscript since DP isn't
producing Postscript itself). The odds are good that you could use
any driver for a postscript printer to get this.
Try Employee Purchase, but they may not be the best priced. For many
products, you can do better by buying a competitor's product through
main order. Get a copy of "Computer Shopper" and look over prices.
You might want to also look at the ads in a magazine dedicated to
Desktop Publishing.

1616.7 | AmigaWorld Article Recap | CELSST::FISHER | John Fisher @RTP | DTN 367-4451 | Wed Aug 24 1988 11:18 | 38 |
| You might also want to look at the July '88 AmigaWorld.
Starting on page 32 the magazine covers a few laser printers that are
available. Obviously, other printers will work with the Amiga. This
is especially true if the printer supports PostScript. In that
case, it should be possible to use the Apple LaserWriter print driver
that is supplied with the Amiga. (Check first, before buying).
On page 42 there is an article that describes Laser Printer Utilities.
One of the advantages that these seem to provide is some independance
from the connected device. That is, it appears that it is possible
to run these utilities at home, and transfer the resulting PostScript
file to a system that can access a PostScript printer. The utilities
mentioned are:
LaserUp! Plot ($49.95) - Aegis Draw or Draw Plus to
PostScript converter (for
high density plotting)
LaserUp! Print ($89.95) - IFF to PostScript converter
LaserUtilities ($39.95) - Easily Imbed PostScript commands
into WordProcessing and ASCII
text files
All are available from: Scott Anthony Studios
889 De Haro St.
San Francisco, CA 94107
415/826-6193
General caution: Unfortunately, AmigaWorld articles are not as
indepth as I would like to see them. Thus, there is a very good
chance that there are MANY more products available than these. But
this should act as a adequate starting point....

1616.8 | Downloading fonts | SHIRE::GANGUILLET | | Fri Aug 26 1988 11:30 | 13 |

The problem is that all the Pagesetter fonts are not available
with the LN03, (e.g. Garamond, + few others)
Is there a way to download those fonts to the Laser printer ?
Is it possible to connect an AMIGA directly to the LN03
Does the ln03 have a parallel or a serial port ?
The Apple Laserwriter has only a serial port and it's 10 times
slower.

| The LN03 has only a serial port. It is possible to purchase fonts
for it, but it would probably be easier to bypass all of the font
machinery and just send page images to the LN03. Note that the
LN03 is a "write-white" engine, so diagonal lines that are one pixel
wide disappear.
I have the Computer Modern family of fonts for the LN03, if that
will do you any good.

Yes, do you have those fonts on line ?
I was on the way to by a LN03R for myself, but I'm definitely looking
for a parallel port printer, it's so faster!

1616.11 | Postscript Text Utility | WINNER::JBERNARD | John Bernard YWO/292-2591 | Mon Aug 29 1988 12:51 | 12 |
| I uploaded a text to ps postscript utility that I use on my printer.
The printer is connected to the serial port at 9600. This utility
doesn't go through any drivers.
This is nice if you have a postscript printer for desktop publishing
and want to use it for a system printer also.
The arc file is in WINNER::DISK$USER_1:[JBERNARD.AMIGA]PSPrintV14.arc.
The arc file contains the executable, source and a small doc file.
I used Lattice 4.0 to compile it.

I don't have the fonts on-line, because they're too big, even in
PK format. Send me Email and I'll send you a 6250-bpi mag tape
with a VAX Backup save set. To use these font files on the Amiga
you would need a TeX DVI driver for the LN03 that runs on the
Amiga.

If you don't mind, howmuch did you pay for the LN03R. Did you buy
through Employee purchase. Also anyone else who wishes to post
the price that they paid for other laser printers please post those
prices too.
