1571.1 | When 1.3? | TLE::RMEYERS | Randy Meyers | Tue Aug 02 1988 03:03 | 20 |
| Re: .0
I went to the Boston Computer Society Amiga Tech meeting. This is
a special interest group made up largely of real developers (you can
buy their products in stores) for the Amiga. They were making a
lot of "It'll be out next month jokes." (That's what Commodore
tells them every time they ask.)
The answer is no one knows when it will available.
Although there might be some reason to hold off on a disk drive until
1.3 is out (make sure the drive REALLY supports autoboot and the fast
file system), there isn't too much need to wait on memory since
support for that is undergoing no changes. (Unless you are thinking
about buying a disk control and memory expansion in one.)
You don't have to wait for CARD: to take advantage of a recoverable
ram disk. The ASDG shareware recoverable ram disk works just fine
and makes better use of your memory. (Unlike CARD:, VD0: dynamically
grows and shrinks based on how much data is stored.)

| I guess CARD: is the recoverable ram disk that will come with WB
1.3 huh? I read in BYTE (aug 88) that you can reboot from the new
ram disk! And I'm extremely excited about this! ( I have to reboot
alot, I'm writing a video game. ) This is the best thing that's
ever happened in my entire life! Please, don't tell me it's not
true!

1571.3 | Get GOMF | TLE::RMEYERS | Randy Meyers | Fri Sep 02 1988 04:56 | 17 |

>Please, don't tell me it's not true!
Well, you can reboot from the new RAM disk, but you need 1.3 Kickstart
in ROM or an Amiga 1000 in order to do it.
The one 1.3 Kickstart is not needed to use any of the new features in
the 1.3 Workbench. Kickstart 1.3 will be available on disk for Amiga
1000 owners, and will be ROMs for the Amiga 500/2000 owner who wish
to make the upgrade. I suspect (just a guess) that the ROMs will be
in limited supply for awhile.
To eliminate needing to reboot, I recommend you get a copy of GOMF
(costs about $30). It intercepts most system errors and optionally
removes the errant task.

Happened upon this BIX posting of Carolyn's on the local BBS (JC ... hi, Thad),
and thought it might be of some interest :-) ...
Congrats to CATS, et al! Now, is anyone in production/manufacturing out there
to comment on availability?

TITLE: >>> 1.3 Released to Production <<<
I have been asked to make the announcement that 1.3 Workbench and Extras
have been released to Production. I can't supply a date on when Enhancer
kits will be in the stores or available through CATS, but the manuals are
being printed right now, so you should be seeing them quite soon.
I will be uploading the few files which changed between Omega 9 and
Release to amiga.com and amiga.update listings areas as soon as I get myself
a copy of Release.
We would like to thank all of our developers who participated in the
Beta/Gamma/Omega-testing of 1.3, especially those who provided quick and
valuable feedback by downloading and using each version as it was posted to
the closed listings areas.

| according to today's usenet, some folks already have it (I assume
they are developers) and one dealer was claiming that he would
have it by Oct 1st.
That BIX notice looks like they finally are out of field test :-)
Now it is just a small matter of getting it to the dealers.
Didn't see any mention of cost. Hmmm..

1571.7 | Shipping October 10? | NAC::PLOUFF | Cider Season Has Begun | Mon Oct 10 1988 10:56 | 9 |
| Went to Memory Location in Wellesley on Saturday. Don Towne, the
co-owner, said, "We have the ROMs already but not the disks. The
disks should ship on October 10. We've ordered 300 copies so they
should be around for a little while." So it's getting closer!
Price? Omnitek in Tewksbury, Mass, thinks that the new disks will
cost $25. Pretty reasonable, I'd say.

Picked up mine last night also at TML. Actually I almost didn't get it!
After my typical zig-zag up and down rt 16 to hone in on TML (I still get
lost!), I got there at 5:57 (they close at 6:00), ran through the rain
and asked for a copy of 1.3 -
"Sorry. We're all out! We ordered 300, recieved 96, and sold them all!"
Suddenly a voice - "Hey, your looking for 1.3, right?"
" I sure am!"
" Here, take mine. I have some rethinking to do..."
"!!!"
So thanks Jeff, if you out there!
Looks like 1.3 is hot stuff. If you want it, and hear of it ina store,
Don't walk, RUN!

Aaaaaaaarrrrggggghhhhh !!!!!!!!
Much gnashing and wailing of teeth here !! I've just heard that
Commodore are waiting until the big Commodore show before releasing
1.3 in the UK - the show is 18.19 & 20 November, so it looks like
we here will have to wait another 5-6 weeks for it.
Another small flame while I'm on the boil (nothing to do with 1.3
or C-A):
There is an ad in the November AUI magazine for the wedge, (something
I had considered as a possible route to a cheap hard drive) but
they were asking $225 (CDN) !!! PLUS $20 shipping !!!! The last
I heard of the wedge, the price was around $130 CDN. Is this the
regular price now ? or is it just another rip off directed at we
poor cousins in Europe ????

| re: .20
Dear Peeved,
I planned on calling Dave Allen today to find out if I should
order the WEDGE software update now or wait - given the RSN
availability of KS / WB 1.3 (the Ottawa dealer says Friday). I
want to make sure they have any compatibility bugs (if there are
any) ironed out, particularly in the FFS area. I will ask him for
his European pricing and shipping policy.
When I ordered my WEDGE in Feb 1988, it cost me $170 for the WEDGE
(A1000 version) c/w software, $110 for the Controller (which you
can buy yourself at your local I*M/clone PC shop), and $10 for
shipping - total of $290 Canadian. If I recall I got it for about
$10-$20 less than list because I am a member of the Ottawa AMIGA
Users Group.
I'll let you know what I find out.
Art
P.S. I'm happy as a pig in sh*t with the WEDGE.

Yup, that's the latest price, even for us only a few hundred miles from
the manufacturer. I checked just last week. For another $110 CDN he
will throw in a DTC 5150 controller which is required to complete the
A500 to ST-506 conversion (apparently the DTC 5150 is the only one
they will support from the Wedge 500 at this time).
I saw an add for the Spirit HDA-506 in the Amiga Sentry and called
them. This is another A500 to ST-506 disk adapter. They list at $249
US and will be shipping next month. Abel has it on there latest list
for around $197.00 US. That comes in cheaper than the Wedge (Approx.
$240 CDN and no requirement for the DTC 5150).
For my money, I'd probably go with the Spirit, I believe it is a one
board design and most important, cheaper.
Regards..... Clint

Ah, that's a pity, at these prices it's no longer worth it. It would
cost me something like 450 total (wedge, controller, st-506 drive,
PC box & power supply) while for another 50 I can get a 20Mb SCSI
complete (plus 100 per extra 10Mb). Thanks for the answer anyway.
