1531.0. "What ever happened to Turbo Pascal?" by SANFAN::BARRETODE () Tue Jul 12 1988 19:20

I was reading an old issue of AMIGA WORLD and saw an ad from Borland
about how they had been chosen by Commadore to supply a Pascal compiler
for the Amiga. One of the reasons it's taken me so long to come
over from CP/M-land is that I love my Turbo Pascal.
Anyone know why this Borland/Commadore marriage never happened?
Has anyone used both Turbo and an Amiga Pascal and could make a
    comparative recommendation.

I suspect the answer to why it never came out is simple,
the size of Amiga market was just too small.

Commodore had big plans, and a lot of promises. Now they have a
large installed base, so Borland may be taking a second look. Why not
call Borland and ask when (not if) the Amiga version of Turbo Pascal
    will be available?

Re: .0

The first reason was that Borland became a big vaporware house. I think
they announced Turbo Pascal for the Mac about two years before release.

The second reason is that a lot of the early enthusiasm that big name
developers had for the Amiga evaporated when they heard about Commodore's
financial position. Commodore was losing money so fast that it wasn't
unreasonable to believe that the company would go under and leave the
Amiga an orphan with an installed base of a few thousand.
1531.3Modula-2 beats PascalCRLVMS::TREESEUse the Source, LukeFri Jul 15 1988 14:358
At this point, I suspect that Modula-2 has beaten out Pascal on
the Amiga anyway. There are three M2 systems available: TDI, Benchmark
and M2Amiga. The last two have integrated editor/compiler environments
(the editors are both EMACS derivatives). I have Benchmark, and
    it works pretty well.
