1471.1 | I'm stumped... | LEDS::ACCIARDI | I Blit, therefore I am... | Mon Jun 13 1988 09:58 | 42 |
| Hmm.. I see we've started a new note on Interceptor... oh well..
No, I couldn't get my analog joystick to work. Nothing at all happened
when I plugged it in.
So, assuming that everyone has run out and bought Interceptpr, it's
time to start trading hints etc.
I had no trouble qualifying (landing on the carrier), or completing
the first two missions. For the uninitiated, the first few missions
are:
1. Visual confirmation - Scramble and identify an approaching
aircraft. You must not fire unless fired upon. When confirmation
is made, you must return to base and safely land. Piece of cake.
2. Save Air Force One - The President's jet is under attack by
MiGs. You are ordered to intercept and destroy the invaders. A
little trickier, but still cake.
3. Recover the F-16s - A pair of advanced F-16s have been stolen
by terrorists and are escaping to the Soviet Union with a pair of
MiGs for escort. You are ordered to scramble and force the return
of the F-16s without any shooting (unless you're fired upon first).
This last one has had me stumped for 9 flight hours. I can easily
overtake the F-16s, but there seems to be no way to get them to
turn back. I've tried flying in front of them, buzzing them at
high speed, etc, but they just keep heading towards the USSR. I've
even fired machine gun bursts over them, but to no avail. After
10 minutes of buzzing them, the MiGs will attack. I can destroy
them and return to base, but the game chides me for not completing
the mission. I've also destroyed the F-16s to prevent them from
reaching the USSR, but that still doesn't count as a completed mission.
I know some hotshots on PLINK are up to missions 5, 6, or 7, but
I'm absolutely stuck here. My flying skills aren't the problem,
it's my strategy. Any ex-fighter jocks out there have any theories
on how to force an enemy to turn back?

I have completed all 6 missions. I, too, have had no sucess
at turning the renegade F-16s back, however, the orders are to insure
that they don't get away so I shoot them down thus completing the job.
I don't play around with the Migs, I hit them hard as soon as
they are in range but I guess it doesn't impress the F-16s.
This is my favorite flight simulation I just wish there were
more missions. BTW I prefer to fly the Falcon rather then the Hornet.
JimBo
P.S.
After you save the president's plane, if
you hot-foot it, you can get to Air Force 1
in time to watch it land.
P.P.S.
Here is a synopsis of the six missions:
4. Rescue the downed pilot - You must find him and deploy a rescue
pod close enough. There are also two bandits flying in the area to
engage as well.
5. Intercept the cruise missile - You must intercept and destroy
a cruise missile and it's escorts. I found this one to be the
hardest until I figured out how to find the cruise missile.
6. Destroy the Sub-Carrier - You must destroy the submersible air-
craft carrier that has been launching enemy Migs and it's escorts.
This one is cute, I destroyed the escorts and was sneaking
up on the sub at 100ft altitude to avoid detection when the damned
thing launched a cruise missile! After I got over my surprize I
broke off the sub attack, chased down and destroyed the cruise missile
then went back and clobbered the sub.

| I also completed the 3rd mission by blowing up the stolen f-16s.
The fourth mission was tougher. It was difficult deploying the rescue
pod close enough to the downed pilot.
I am on the 5th mission now. I am a little befuddled because I blew
up the cruise missile destroyed the russian mig and returned to
the carrier but didn't get credited with the mission.
The first time I tried the 5th mission, I looked on my radar to
try and identify the missile. I picked the wrong blip and wound
up in a dog fight with a russian mig. When I had destroyed the mig,
I went after the missile with my afterburners on. However, it was
too late. Vast nuclear destruction was the penalty. This game is
amazing.
I hope they come out with additional mission disks.

| You definitely have to land on the carrier in the same direction
in which you launched. The visual cue is that the arrestor lines
are at the beginning of the landing strip, not the end. The arrestor
lines should be the first thing you hit, not the last.
An easier cue is that the carrier's superstructure should be on
your right side, not your left.

Are there no variables that can be either played out (don't take

"programmed" in (like choosing at startup one of 'Beginner -
Intermediate - Expert - Tom Cruise' proficiency levels) that
change the game play through the addition of MIGs, making them
harder to hit, forcing you to fly with less than full power
available, change weather conditions (like FSII), etc., etc?
Is there any indication from EA that Mission disks will be
available?
OR - are you guys who are finished all 6 missions, really wing

unfair advantage over the rest of us who may find starting the

difficult as you repeat them. I've noticed that mission #2, which
I successfully completed, was much tougher when I went back to practice
it again.
Remember, the game keeps a running log of your success and failures
that it writes to disk. It even keeps track of how many missiles
and machine gun rounds were fired. I believe it uses this info
to determine the level of intimidation it should present the player.

You can maintain altitude with a throttle setting of 20%
or higher, of course, at 20% you are very close to the stall point
of the F-18 and any sharp turning will cause a stall. The idea
behind a successful landing is to be lined up on the runway, close
but not to close to stall speed ( approximatly 144kts I like 30%
throttle) and 400-300ft altitude as you cross the begining of the
runway. The glide angle should be steep rather than shallow then
hit the brakes and flare just before touchdown.

Why do you hit the flare?
I generally lower my gear, lower my arrestor hook and even put my
breaks on while I am still in the air. I also find that 30%[F3]
to 40%[F4] works well for thrust just before touch down.
Also, one way I have found to get away from missiles fired at you
is: Head your f-18 straight up with your afterburners on. Release
flares and chaff as you see the missile coming closer to you on
your radar screen (missiles are indicated as white dots). Of course
this doesn't work if you are already at 40000+ feet since you cannot
go up from there.
The 6th mission is the funnest.

No, it's not. At least not by myself or any other pilot I know.
To flare is to hold the aircraft just above the runway while airspeed bleeds
off.

I use the low and slow approach, pulling up to the height of the

too hard or missing the wires.

That's what I like about this game. I would have thought that "flaring"
meant throwing up a flare, yet I've landed the jet probably 50 times.
I have to admit that it's not quite as realistic as FSII. For instance,
if you go into a roll, you seem to stay in the roll indefinitely. Also,
the instrument panel is not quite as detailed, you don't have different
weather conditions, etc.
But who cares, it's about 100 times as fun as FSII.

A joystick is not required. You can control the jet by using the
function keys.
Interceptor is exclusively available for the Amiga. I've seen some
excellent game/animation stuff running on the Atari ST, but I
doubt if it could match the sound quality and smoothness of animation
of the Amiga.
Forget the Mac; I've seen Falcon running on an SE. Phooey.
In fact, my brother-in-law, a dyed in the wool Apple zealot, showed
me Falcon on his Mac SE. Then I showed him Interceptor. He turned
an interesting shade of green and inquired as to the current price
of Amiga 500s.
IBM PC/XT/ATs haven't got much balls in this area. The new VGA
machines have gorgeous graphics, but they're pretty static. You
won't see any action simulations running in 640 x 480 VGA mode.
To summarize, the Amiga was created to do precisely this kind of
stuff.

Literally. At AmiExpo in New York, Jay Miner said that this motivation
for building a home computer with custom graphics chips was that a
friend had let him play with a zillion dollar flight simulator for the
military. Jay thought that if he could get investors to let him spend
$50 million dollars developing a personal computer, he might get a decent
platform for a home version of the flight simulator. (He didn't say so,
but I bet he was pretty disappointed in Flight Simulator ][.)

| I pickup up a copy of Interceptor and had the pleasure of meeting Ed
Acciardi at the software Shop in Worcester.
I too have been ignoring many other responsibilities (like sleeping)
with this game. I enjoy just experimenting with "free flight", flying through
the tower (using the tower view), and driving down the highways while hearing
the tires screech as I try to stay on the road at close to 1,000 miles an hour.
I don't know the address of EA, so I haven't tried blowing up their building.
I finally made it past the third mission thanks to the hint of shooting
down our F16s if they don't surrender. I've had one of them follow me back
after I thought I hit it. I suspect that maybe only one of them needs to be
shot down and the other will smarten up. Unfortunately I didn't survive landing
when I had the recovered F16 with me.
But, I have a few questions:
How do I use the range finder ? (that little dot on the sighting circle)
When I have a MIG locked in, I hear beeps, but sometimes I additionally
hear a solid tone. Does anyone know the significance of the solid tone?
(locked on?, and the beeps mean "in sight"?). Will I have a higher
percentage of hits if I wait for the tone ?
Has anyone used the M16 machine gun successfully ? Are there any tricks
or is it just practice?
Thanks and happy flying,
ps. I always assumed the white dots were small boats, but whatever, they add a
great perspective.

| re:.-1
If you hit the "R" key your range will toggle between 2, 10 and
40 miles. This is the key I use the most I think.
The beeping noise means that your range finder has found a target.
The solid tone when you are locking on a target means that you have
your target locked in. If you fire a missile once you hear this
tone, you are almost assured of knocking down the MIG. This is not
to say that you necessarily always need to hear this tone to
successfully shoot one down.

re: .-1
I think you'll also notice that a solid tone also has the words
"in range" at the bottom right corner of the HUD. This means exactly
what it says. However, since you probably have a high closure rate,
espcially if it's a head-on shot, by the time the missle actually
launches it'll probably be in range no-matter what. In fact, it's
probably a good idea to fire a tad before that solid tone if it's
a head-to-head because a missle can only "turn" so much before the
target is out of it's tracking cone and if the target passes you
just as you launch, or just after, there's a good chance the missle
will lose lock-on.
re: .-2
I think the range ring you refer to is the "blip" on the targeting
ring, right? If you notice, the closer your target gets the more
the blip moves in a counter-clockwise motion. I don't know what
it's calibrated at but if it's at 6 o'clock it's closer than 9 o'clock.

I decided to watch it destroy the world instead of shooting it.
Actually, it was a quite boring explosion. I was expecting a huge

| Yesterday my 12-year-old son, who is already a better pilot than
I am, found a cheap way to qualify: you take off from the carrier
and do an inside loop. Because there is no wind and the carrier
doesn't move, you are precisely lined up, and can land easily.
I found another strangeness: you can't taxi over the Dumbarton bridge
(near the EA offices). If you try you get stuck, as though you
had landed on water. I haven't tried the Bay Bridge or the Golden
Gate bridge yet.
In the scenery department, I was disappointed that 101 did not extend
north into Marin County. I wanted to try flying through the tunnels

that legitimate consumers have experienced with the infamous
"F/A-18 Interceptor Flight Computer."
----------------------------------------------------------------
Perform the following patch on a backup copy of your disk!
Use NewZap or similar disk sector editor:
1. Go to sector 231 of the "F-18 Interceptor" file. The
four changes you need to make are on that sector.
2. Search for hex string $0240000F. It appears three times.
Replace each occurrence with $02400000.
3. Next, search for $0241000F which appears once. Replace
it with $02410000.
That's all there is to it. Whenever a request for a countercode
appears, just type 0000. No need to hit RETURN since the fourth
0 you type enters the countercode.

Running "F-18 Interceptor" from a Hard Disk
Be sure you use a backup copy of your program disk!
So you want to run the program from a hard disk. That's simple
too. Using NewZAP, or a similar disk sector editor, search for
every occurrence of DF0: and replace it with F18:. Be patient,
there are quite a few to replace!
Next, copy the entire disk to a separate directory on your hard
disk. Let's assume you have named the new directory "Interceptor"
on drive DH0:. In your startup-sequence file, add the following
line:
ASSIGN F18: DH0:INTERCEPTOR
This forces the program to look in your new hard disk directory
for all the supporting "F-18 Interceptor" files.

Right, Paul. I wasn't even sure if it was proper material for the notes file
which is why I left it ARC'ed in my AMIGA directory. I know I'll appreciate
being able to use the patch when I buy my copy. (Soon, I hope ;^) )

Subject: WARNING -- Interceptor Patch
Posted: 4 Jul 88 14:37:25 GMT
Organization:
[posted to the generic ARPANET amiga-relay list]
Recently a "patch" for the brain-damaged F/A-18 Interceptor copy
"protection" was posted (S. Casey was the poster). This patch will only
work if the version of Interceptor you have is the one that
this patch was written for. If ONE BYTE is different, you get a
destroyed copy. A "better" patch program would check the context of
the changed locations FIRST, verifying that things are the same, THEN
changing the locations. Though I know of no "other" versions of
Interceptor out there, it IS possible, so caution is suggested. All
zeroed out values should have been 0xF prior to change and you should
NEVER modify your original. Be sure to make that copy and modify the copy
only.
[Note that one "bug fix" on EA's part is sufficient to render that
patch program invalid. Bug fixes do not necessarily result in new version
numbers...]

Subject: F/A-18 patch program. Source and uuencoded executable.
Posted: 4 Jul 88 12:56:07 GMT
Organization: The Leaning Tower of Patterson Office @ The Univ. of KY
F/A-18 Interceptor is a marvelous program. Unfortunately, for $50, you
have to turn a cardboard "code wheel" every 5 minutes. This is idiocy.
I refuse to be humiliated this way after I paid so much money for the
program.
Someone sent me patch instructions to use with newzap, and I incorporated
them into a program to automate the patching. I suppose someone could come
up with a better patch, but this can do for now. You still have to answer
the question, but the answer is always 0000.
Instructions:
Use a copy of your original disk.
Unshar and uudecode.
Run f18fix and put your copy in DF0: when asked.
The disk whirs a few seconds and it's done.
The code response will always be 0000 from this point on.
DISCLAIMER
I am not responsible if you trash your disks with this program. Use
it at your own risk.
If you don't like what I'm doing, or think I advocate software piracy,
get stuffed. If you do like what I'm doing, may you live a long life,
your children have the normal number of limbs, etc...
* F/A-18 Interceptor is a Trademark of Electronic Arts and probably Robert
Dinnerman too.

| I accidently erased my flight log last night and had to re-qualify.
A couple of hints: circling and re-landing doesn't always work.
Both times I've had to qualify, it was necessary to find and shoot
down MIGs before landing on the carrier.
Also, the program favors an aggressive style. Ignore the warnings
not to shoot first...hit them hard and fast, you won't be penalized.
I think another note may have already mentioned the only way to
get the stolen F-16's to return is to shoot one down.

To get the stolen F-16s to return you fly up behind them
as close as possible and match speed and altitude. You will get
a "Well Done return to carrier" message and the F-16s will turn
around and head back. If you follow them they will almost make
it back to the airfield then turn around and bug out again. I
usually shoot them down when this happens. Heh Heh Heh!

Haven't tried it, but apparently carrier cannot be "sunk". The latest
info is that a strafing run, approaching "on the deck" (altitude < 150 ft.)
is about all the game expects for an "attaboy".
That's pretty realistic, actually. The F/A-18 is equipped with air-to-air
missles and a fairly small-bore cannon. Expecting it to do much to a large
ship is asking a lot. (Unless it's got an Exocet or similar missle just
for this mission, in which case you can strike from 5 miles out...) It's
possible to disrupt operations by damaging the control tower, elevator,
or radar array, maybe. I thought that maybe crashing on the flight deck
might be effective (bailing out at the last second, of course...), but it's
not realisticly cost-effective- it STILL wouldn't SINK a carrier (after
all, they have to withstand accidental crashes...).
For comparison, SQADRONS of American planes managed to destroy 4 Japanese
carriers (which were quite small by modern standards) at Midway, but they were
carrying 1000-pound bombs and torpedoes, designed to sink ships. The
air-to-air fighters only provided cover. The Japanese co-operated by
having most of their planes, bombs, torpedoes, and fuel out on the flight
decks (which were WOODEN), so we could blow them up.
Happy flying,
John O.

| Approach the carrier at an altitude of less than 100 ft. If you
exceed that altitude, a cruise missile will launch, virtually ending
your chances for a successful mission. As you approach the carrier,
pull up an overfly it, then go after the MIGs. No need to fire missiles
at the carrier.

I bought F-18 Interceptor a week ago and haven't gotten any sleep

work for me. Has anyone gotten this to work? I haven't tried the

F-18 so that the known patch procedures stop working ?? What do you

I've been thinking. You know what would be great?
Imagine the same quality work done on Interceptor but, instead of
modern aircraft, it used WWI or WWII aircraft? Wouldn't be great
flying around in a Sopwith Camel or Spitfire at low speeds instead
of Mach 1.5!
You'd be able to see the other plane and use guns!

re: slow planes
how about F-18 vs. WWI airplanes? Missles designed to track the
heat of a jet might not be able to find a WWI airplane. Can the
F-18 slow down enough to dogfight a WWI airplane?
I tried StarGlider II at the Memory Location, first thing I did
was try to loop it - nope, it will let you leave orbit but not
loop. It has the promised solid shapes instead of wireframe,
but after F-18, that kind of thing isn't as impressive anymore.
So when will the F-18 scenario disks ship? :-)

There was a story in Analog Magazine years ago about a modern supersonic fighter
that somehow landed on an airfield in France during World War I. The pylot faced
ed the same problems--his heat-seekers couldn't see the heat of an Internal
Combustion engine. He also found the same solution--a fly-by at Mach 2 which
tore the fragile fighters apart.
I think it was call "A Hawk Among Sparrows"

I must admit, I have that Analog magazine. Great cover painting,
good story. But it did mention he had some concern about encountering
bullets from those WWI planes (a slow bullet hit at Mach 2 could
do a bit of damage).
re: .59
I believe it's third hand info from Usenet. Somebody talked to
Moses Ma at a user group meeting about F-18 futures. Amazing Computing
had a couple mentions of it. Basically, it seems that EA doesn't
want to do add-ons like scenery disks. So it will be another company
that will does it.

I interpreted the story in a different light. Moses Ma sees he has a really
hot program and sees no reason why he should cut Electronic Arts in for
a piece of the action.
Isn't this what happened with Flight Simulator? The versions for the IBM
pc and Mac were published by Microsoft, but the developer knew he had a
hot property and decided to start his own company to market the versions
for all other pcs.

Could be. Guess it depends on what kind of contract EA has with
him. Whatever the situation, he had better get something out soon
if he wants to cash in on the popularity of F-18. He created
a new level of expection for Amiga flight simulators, showing
there is a big potential market for the first competitor that
comes out with something better than F-18.

Miquel,
I approach from the east at 200/300 ft with a throttle setting
of 20%. You will have to pull the nose up quite a bit to keep from
stalling; just watch that your air speed doesn't drop below 144kts.
With the radar set on the 2 mile range, punch the SHIFT F keys to drop
the rescue pod when the pilot's blip is on the center of the radar
screen. I tried using direct visuals (i.e. bottom view) but I couldn't
get close enough, the above procedure works consistantly.
Happy Flying,

On rereading my reply after it was posted I saw an error,
you have to pull the nose up to keep from loosing altitude not
stalling in fact if you pull the nose up too far you will stall.
So the optimum is to pull the nose up to the point where you
neither gain or loose altitude.

1471.69 | Help! Brain-damaged Interceptor (or pilot?) | WAV14::HICKS | Fan mail from some flounder? | Mon Jan 02 1989 13:20 | 37 |
| I hope this subject isn't too old to get a reply. I'm stumped!!!
I went throught the typical learning curve with Interceptor, qualified
to fly missions, and had gotten as far as the third mission (stolen
F-16s). Then I decided that I didn't like all the recorded shot-down
and failed missions, and wantet to change my name on the log, so
I cleared it. I re-qualified, and flew the first mission
clean-as-a-whistle (even though sorely tempted to shoot the Mig
down out of vain, macho, spite!).
Now, the weirdness. I started the second mission (save Air Force
One). When the mission description comes up, neither Air Force
one nor the Bogeys are shown on the map. I get a very tame description
of the mission status, go down to launch, but the usual "YOUR VECTOR
BLAH FOR INTERCEPT" message never appears, just "READY TO LAUNCH".
Launch as usual. Air Force One never shows up on radar. Fly to
where the Bogeys will show-up. Only one Bogey on screen, shoot
it down, go for next Bogey. I start dog-fighting with the second
Bogey, get ready to fire AND THE GAME FREEZES-UP!!! Usually the
screen is intact, the sounds keep coming, but everything else is
frozen solid! I have to reboot. Once the screen turned to an
alternating normal screen and change to corned-beef hash, cycling
back and forth.
I have gone back to recopy the release disk, doesn't seem to make
a difference. Now that I think of it, once I completed the mission,
having shot-down both Migs, returned to the carrier, no other enemy
planes showed up, sat on the deck with my engines shut off, and
never got confirmation that I had completed the mission. I never
get the picture of AF-1 or anything!
What gives here, folks? Has anyone else ever had this happen?
I thought I'd see if you had any ideas before I try anything more
drastic. This is really frustrating!

| Well, Tim, if nothing else seems to work you might try deleting "config" from
the Interceptor disk. I really can't figure why it would be weirding out on
you like that, but deleting config will force it to start you over again from
scratch.
By the way, I'm like you. On the first mission, I just had to bag the MIGs.
It really shouldn't let you complete the mission since it plainly says "DO
NOT FIRE UNLESS FIRED UPON" But, who am I to complain?? :-)

Yes, and the Migs will fire on the carrier if you're still in the

| In the middle of entering this reply, the original base note was moved.
Surprise! No message from notes or nothin', with the base note still on
the screen. Pretty weird (No reflection on you, Mr. Moderator; you're
just too damn fast! 8?). Anyways, thank the developers for REPLY/LAST...
This has been discussed before (dir/tit=interceptor), but what worked
for me follows (well, I got the "well done..." denoting a completed
task but wound up crashing on the deck of my carrier on return):
You don't have to actually destroy the enemy carrier to complete the
mission. I believe (from experience and from the previous discussions)
it's impossible to destroy it anyway. I've thrown everything I've got
at it, from every conceivable angle, and still nothing. I've crashed
into it kamikazee (sp?) style and even landed on it, but no luck.
The keys here are to approach at an altitude under 100 feet (to avoid
radar detection, says the manual) and make a strafing run at the
carrier (don't even bother firing any missles, although it does give
you an ego boost ;^). At this point, go after and destroy all the MIGs
you can find (usually when you destroy the original two, more will be
launched; I think a total of 4 or 5). Once this is done, you should get
the "return to base" (or whatever) message. Just don't crash land like
I did!
One obstacle may be if a cruise missle is launched from the enemy
carrier. Usually this happens if you approach from over 100 feet, but
sometimes it'll happen even if the MIGs don't pick you up. In that
case, you might spend a lot of time chasing cruise missles and then
more are launched as you return to strafe the carrier. Not a good
situation.
Hope this helps,
Pete
