1438.1 | price drop coming | SAUTER::SAUTER | John Sauter | Wed May 25 1988 14:49 | 25 |
| This looks very similar to the educational offer they made a while
ago. I suspect they are about to drop their price, and want to
get all the mileage they can out of it.
I suspect this was written by a sales or marketing person at
WordPerfect. Here is my evidence:
1) it uses "xerox" as an adjective, without attribution. Thus,
it must not have been reviewed by their Legal department.
(Or they have the cheapest lawyer in Orem.)
2) In the next to last line, it uses "employers" instead of
"employer's". Thus the author was not a professional writer.
Even the Orem public school system does not countenance such
errors.
3) It praises version 5.0 for its integration of text and graphics
but doesn't say which machines it runs on. The author
apparently feels that the IBM PC is the default system.
The product development people at WordPerfect obviously don't
believe that, or they would not have produced the versions
for the other systems.
When you eliminate the legal people, the professional writers and
the prople involved with product development, all you have left
is sales and marketing, Q.E.D.

WordPerfect's educational prices exist across the board all the
time. The Bentley college software store (Waltham) carries most of
these at the educational prices for students (no amiga but I believe
they can give you a form to order). These do look like the same prices.

BTW One of the support people on the WP phone line said they are working
on a newer version for Amiga WP which will support graphics. Must
be V5.0. No other details.

1438.3 | WordPerfect 5.0? | LOWLIF::DAVIS | That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE! | Wed May 25 1988 17:04 | 8 |
| WordPerfect 5.0?? Great, but has anyone heard when it should be out? My
wife was going to take advantage of the student discount and purchase it
this summer. Should we wait for 5.0? About how expensive does WP make
their new versions?
Thanks,

| Excellence! has received rave reviews on Plink. It supposedly does
every conceivable function.
WP Corp has hired Mike Scalora (SCARY) one of the more outspoken
Ami fanatics from USENET. Mike is working, of course, on Amiga
versions of WP. Mike is available on PLINK (ID=WPCORP) to answer
questions. Of course, WP corp has excellent customer support phone
lines.

Your half-baked logic has the following underlying assumptions:
ONLY sales and marketing people (by the way, note the correct
spelling of "people") universally and uniformly share the following
characteristics: 1) they don't understand the significance or
ramifications of using a trademark without attribution, 2) they
don't recognize the difference between the plural form of a noun
and the use of an apostrophe to make a noun a possessive adjective,
and 3) they are out-of-touch with the market scope and direction for
their company's products.
Your third point also assumes that "product development people"
are the ones who ultimately decide which machines on the market
will recieve the funding and resources to develop, market and
support a version of Word Perfect. Everyone else is unconcerned
and/or uninformed.
Both these assumptions are parochial claptrap. I was surprised
you didn't put a :^) after your note. You can't be serious. This
is a terrifically helpful and enjoyable conference. Why don't you
put any other "informed observations" like that on paper and file
them in your desk.
Thanks.

1438.8 | WordPerfect Library for Amiga | 3D::CORDNER | | Thu Jun 02 1988 11:14 | 42 |
| I've received additional data from WordPerfect Corp. which points to one error
in what I stated in -.0. I said there that I believed that, except for noted
exceptions, all other WordPerfect products ran only in the PC-DOS environment.
That appears to be correct with one exception described here. I apologize for
the error, however, WordPerfect's own statements led me to the erroneous
conclusion.
The information I've received from WordPerfect about their other products, says
in part:
"A version of WordPerfect Library is also available for the Amiga
500, 1000, and 2000 computers."
It describes WordPerfect Library as:
"...a desktop integration and utility program...Included in Library
are six integrated programs that are fully compatible with other
WordPerfect Corporation products. All programs remain memory-
resident under a 'Shell' program manager, which allows the user to
switch programs rapidly and to share data easily.
* The Calculator features an on-screen tape display whose contents
can be copied to another program or printed.
* The Calendar is designed to help organize and keep track of time
schedules.
* With the File Manager, the user can easily create, display, delete,
and print file and directories.
* The Notebook helps organize information and records in single lines
or index card format.
* The Program Editor is an easy-to-use, yet powerful tool for
creating and editing almost any type of file, including text
(ASCII), batch, and program files.
* The Macro Editor lets the user create and edit macros for all
WordPerfect Corporation products."
