1304.0. "3.5" Internal Drive(s)" by FNYTC4::KENNEDY () Tue Apr 05 1988 12:04

Hi, I've been having some intermittent read/write errors on my 3.5"
internal drive. When loading WB from a diskette I sometimes get
a requestor telling me that df0: is giving read/write errors. I
keep clicking 'continue' and don't seem to suffer later from it.

The *most* irritating thing of all is that it is totally inconsistent,
sometimes I get a few R/W errors on one diskette, sometimes none,
sometimes I am able to bypass by clicking 'continue', sometimes there's
no solution but to reset. I took the top off and connected the df0:
drive to the connector that is way down the ribbon (there are
two connectors on my ribbon, the top one has a twist in one section
of the ribbon) to see if that made any difference. I haven't had
a 'serious' reoccurance of the R/W errors yet, but it's only been two
days! I rang Commodore UK technical support and they told me that
just changing the connector shouldn't make any difference, they
suggest that I might have "intermittent head allignement" problems.

Anyone had similar problems to mine? Any suggestions?

    Keith

    Same thing happened to me...

I took the machine back to the shop, and they gave me a new one.
    No fuss at all.

The main problem was, all the disks written by the old one (a full
quarters accounts) couldn't be read by the new one !

Thus I would suggest that you get something done as soon as possible,
or you may have a lot more typing to do...

If you have a lot of potentialy unreadable data, I suggest you copy
it to disks in the external drive, cos there's no way you can
'missalign' heads to read missaligned data. So this HAS to be done
using the duff drive to read them. (I had already handed my old
    machine back.....)

It could be that the first connector is flakey. Might not be making
a good connection to the ribbon cable. Or maybe there was some
    oxidation on the contacts.

This may not apply to your case, but it's worth mentioning...

You're not using one of the "speed up" programs like STEPRATE, are
you? This is exactly how my system acted when I had the stepper
rate set just a wee bit too fast. It worked most of the time, but
I would occasionally get the R/W error requestor, sometimes several
times in a row. Been working perfectly ever since I slowed down
    the step rate a little.

Very odd indeed. I just installed a new A2000 (Rev. 4.3 board -
new keyboard ---> The old LEFT Amiga key is back!!!) and got a
read/write error on the supplied Workbench diskette. Eventually
got it loaded though. My old Workbench disks work fine. I suspect
that the new disk was a bit draggy from lack of use on some Taiwan
    waterfront dock!
