1255.0. "LJ250/Amiga 500 - How to do????" by SNOC01::SFCDEV () Thu Mar 17 1988 17:50

Basically, I'm in the market to buy a printer to hang off my Amiga
    500. I'm looking for decent quality and reliability. Colour, graphics
etc would be great if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I noticed in some early notes that people were expressing interest in
the LJ250 colour printer for their Amigas.

Has anyone done this sucessfully? If so, could you please explain
exactly what you had to do to make it all work, preferably in
non-engineer terms that a programmer could understand? Were there
any difficulties or anything that you would have liked to work that
didn't? Is there a print-screen type capability? Will this work
    in Australia?

I'd be interested in any comments on the pros and cons on using
the LJ250 with an Amiga 500.

    Thanks in advance,

    Eleanor Brown

I have an Epson RX-80F/T with the Dresselhaus "Dots perfect" character
ROM and both serial and parallel ports built in that I will sacrafice
    for $250.

I was able to use the LJ250 directly from the Amiga serial port
without any problems. I borrowed one from the training center here
along with the cable being used to connect it to the uv2. I connected
it to the serial switch box (from DEC) loaded the HP-Paintjet driver
(made available through another note in this conference) and proceeded
to print text (all letter quality) and great pictures from just
about anywhere I could find anything worth looking at.

Since then whenever I have a picture worth printing I use the CMD
program on the Ami to capture the LJ250 print info to a file, which
I then upload to work and print it to the LJ250 spooled off of the
VAX, which works great for me (but then I don't print a lot of
    pictures).

connection information and a driver location.)

If you're buying the LJ strictly for your Amiga, I would suggest
getting the LJ252. This is the parallel version of this printer
and directly attaches to the Amiga parallel port (it even comes
    with the proper cable!!!)

With this setup, you have the LJ off the Parallel port and either
another printer or modem off your serial port.

When using SMOKEY terminal emulator, you can Ascii Capture to PRT:
and you essentially have an amy printer port. I currently have
this setup at work, and it works fine... no bugs at all. The best
part is that the printer is very quiet.

You have an A500 at the office? What are you using it for. We may
consider an Amiga here for digitizing as part of the art production
    process.

I use it as a workstation until my VaxStation 2000 comes in. It's
great for doc prep and blowing the socks off people who come by
and ask "what's that"? Actually, I'm in the VT200 emulator most
of the time, but it sure is easy to up/download at 9600 baud!
