1162.0. "A500 Strange Noise..." by WAV14::HICKS () Fri Feb 12 1988 14:13

    Hi All:

    I have a new A500. Things are going swell (though an external Drive
    will be added sooner than I previously expected...got any
    recommendations?), but there's this strange noise...

    Whenever the df0: drive is empty, I get a quiet click-type noise
    which occurs at regular intervals of about 4 or 5 seconds. When
    there's a diskette in the drive all's silent.

    Is this *normal*? I went mail-order for the unit, so sending it
    back to the dealer will be a pain, but I'd rather do it now if
    necessary.

    Yes, it's perfectly normal. Just insert any disk and the drive
    will shut up.

The drive is clicking because the system keeps track of what disk is in
what drive. Notice how the disk icon pops up in workbench when you stick
a disk in? Welcome to the world of the Amiga! I got my Amiga in December
(Merry Christmas!) and can't stop playing on it!!!!

Regarding the drive, do a DIR/TITLE=PRO and read some review on the ProDrive.
I'm going to order one ASAP, sounds like a real winner.

					Later on...

    too bad that kickstart is in rom...for all of us 1000 owners, a
    nifty 'hack' on usenet gave us NoKlickstart...a patch to the kickstart
    disk to silence the drive...the difference is to change the direction
    of the "step" looking for the disk to be inserted....see
    mvcad3::user0:[amiga.usenet]

    I'm a novice 1000 owner and I was greatly interested in the note
    about NoKlickstart but I was unsure about how you were supposed to
    run the program after you decode it from the Fish disk. Are you
    just supposed to type "NoKlickstart" (or whatever the program name
    is) and it asks you to insert your Kickstart disk? What would be
    the steps for implementation (for a novice)?
1162.5yes, I think all you do is run it.MVCAD3::BAEDERD. Scott DTN 237-2961 SHR1-3/E19Mon Feb 15 1988 18:068
    I cant remember, but that seems to ring a bell...looking at the
    files in mvcad3::user0:[amiga.usenet]noklick* seem to also indicate
    that...give it a try...but be sure to use a backup disk!

    (Did I really need to say that..we all use backups, right...;-)
