Need jumpering instructions.... Yesterday I found a relatively cheap ( < 150 $ ) NEC FD1036A - they are currently rare here - but the jumpering instruction I got with it are for the A500 and I'd like to install it as df1 internal on my A2000. I have neither the NEC drive specs nor the A2000 tech man (ordered, but still waiting for), so can anybody tell me about the jumpers? The drive has to be jumpered for the A500: DL - in TB2 - in DL6 - jumper between middle and right pin DX - jumper at 0 (I inserted it at 1 for df1 - but no avail) U5 chip - right hand side bridge pin 9 and 10 (from top) drive works pretty well as single df0, but the system won't boot when 2 drives installed. I swapped the drives (changed DX in the original Masushita to 1), and the system booted, I could see the df1 but with either 'drive unreadable' or 'no disk present' messages. So - do I have to change jumpers on the motherboard too and/or on the Masushita (JU-363-282) and/or on the NEC?

Re: .0 For DF1: to be recognized by the system, jumper J301 on the motherboard of the Amiga 2000 must be closed. Ref. the Amiga 2000 Manual Update

re.: .0 If your new drive works as drive 0, you're almost home. The two things that must now occurr for it to function as df1: are that it must be physically selected on a select line other than the one that df0: occupies, and the system must know that it exists as an AmigaDos drive. Since I'm doing this without the docs in front of me, some exact details of this may be wrong, but the principle is, I believe, sound. First, there are four select lines on the drive, SEL0/ through SEL3/, non-mux'd active low. Drive df0: uses SEL0/. The external expansion architecture is such that all physical drives are set up as unit zero (SEL0/), and the select lines from the Amiga are bumped down one notch at each drive. Internally, I think the second drive must be jumpered to respond to SEL1/, so set it that way. Second, you must let the AMiga know the drive is there. The automatic way is to short jumper 301 on the 2000 motherboard. This enables a circuit that places the 3.5" unit ID code onto the READY line when the SEL1/ line is pumped (32 times) with motor off at boot time. Otherwise you can create a mountlist entry for the drive and install it "manually" (in your startup-sequence) with the MOUNT command. The mountlist entry in the file sys:devs/mountlist should be named df1: and indicate that the physical drive is unit 1. John
1025.3 | working now - almost | CRANS2::KRAMER | Murphy was an optimist.. | Fri Jan 01 1988 16:23 | 17 |
re .1 and .2 I removed the TB2 jumper on the NEC and changed the DX selector to 1. When booting without a disk in df1 the workbench showed a 'df1:bad' icon, when booting with a disk inserted, the disk got correctly validated - OK so far When changing the disk in df1, Disk validation can be done manually via DiskChange command - OK - but as far as I understand, the validation of 3 1/2" disks should be done automagically???? (maybe I'm wrong - my Amiga is just some days old and the documentation which came with it is just pooooor - no Manual update - for example) BTW: Inserting/removing of J301 jumper didn't change the systems behavior.

The NEC FD1036A drive has to be jumpered for the A2000: (as df1:) DL - in TB2 - in MO - out DL6 - jumper between middle and left!! pin - installation instruction was wrong!! U5 chip - right hand side bridge pin 9 and 10 (from top) DX - jumper at 1 On the motherboard J301 - in (thanks for the tip!!) No jumper modifications on the Masushita df0: Automatic drive validation works now. -HRK ps: A happy new year to you all!!!! |
