984.1 | Use RUNBACK | LEDS::ACCIARDI | | Fri Dec 18 1987 09:46 | 11 |
| Piece of cake... RUNBACK was written just for that purpose.
RUNBACK will launch a new task and return the original CLI prompt
without invoking the RUN command. This was done to eliminate having
the first CLI opened from WorkBench as task number 17 or some such.
If you put RUNBACK >nil: NEWTASK in your startup-sequence, it will
supress the RUNBACK message.

| It has been my experience that conman only works on subsequent CLI's opened,
so that I have to ENDCLI >NIL: then NEWCLI >NIL: FROM Mumble....
in order to make it work.
Is there an easier way?

(ps: RUNBACK can also be found on the FACCII distribution disk as well, and
is well worth the $30)

| Short of using RUNBACK, I think you can achieve the desired effect
with:
RUN >NIL: <NIL: SNIPIT >NIL: <NIL:
The idea is to see to it that neither RUN nor SNIPIT are holding
onto a file handle for the CLI's window, so that when the CLI goes

984.6 | more to come... | LEDS::ACCIARDI | | Tue Dec 22 1987 10:40 | 21 |
| I plan on uploading a new utility called Mach12. This one is really
slick; one short command gives you...
* Screenblanking with defineable timeout
* Mouse accelerator; mouse cursor motion is proportional to
acceleration as well as displacement, just like GPX.
* Defineable hotkeys
* Click-to-front; like Macintosh, clicking anywhere within a window
brings that window to the top.
* SunMouse; merely positioning the cursor over a window makes that
window active.
All these features may be turned on or off at will.
Look for it this weekend in LEDS3::USER6:[ACCIARDI.AMIGA]MACH12.ARC

Unable to load mach: file is not an object module

The only other things going on on my system at the time are VT100 2.6 and the

Am I missing something obvious?

One thing I just noticed though. There doesn't seem to be any way to
modify what happens for the Amiga-Escape (or Alternate-Escape)
sequence. It always does a "NewCLI". My left-amiga-esc sequence does
a "NEWCLI FROM cli-startup". Guess I'll have to map this to one of the
function key hotkeys. I know I'm going to be hitting that
left-Amiga-Escape for sometime!

984.14 | ***** ( five stars ) | MANTIS::LONG | | Tue Dec 29 1987 09:24 | 14 |
| Many thanks for posting this, it was everything I expected and more.
The screen blanker alone will probably save me a monitor in the long
run as I have been in the habit of turning it off and on all the time
to save the screen. The click-to-front and automatic window
activation should have been part of C-A's product as it gives me a
larger target to aim at and makes the windowing environment a
pleasure to work with.
I haven't played with all the other options yet, but this ranks up
there with DBW's VT100 and ASDG's RRD as software I think leaves
the commercial products in the dust.
Thank's again,
Dick

| I think that if CBM had any brains, they'd work out a deal to buy
the rights to Snipit and Mach12 and include them as part of the
system software for 1.3.
Have any of you used Snipit yet? That has got to be the greatest!
last week, I downloaded a text dump of a huge spreadsheet done in
Decalc. I wanted to work at home, but couldn't stand the slow response
at 1200 baud. Plus, I wanted to use the outstanding graphing
capabilities of Maxiplan Plus.
So, I just opened up an ED screen with the Decalc listing on it
and 'snipped' these huge equations off one at a time, and then toggled
screens and inserted them into Maxiplan. I guess I saved a whole
day's worth of re-typing in equations.
I also sent a check to Scott Evernden for Snipit. Remember, these
guys put in some long hours hacking out these aids, so if you use
them, send them a few bucks for their troubles.

Who says you can't have it all! I refused to give up the capability of
automatically ending up in the shell when I started a new cli. I did want the
mouse acceleration, though, so I started Mach12 after starting PopCLI, and since
Mach12 uses Alt-ESC by default, PopCLI has answered the Amiga-ESC sequence every
time, putting me into the shell with my new CLI.
The command I used was "run Mach -5 -b00 -m". (-b00 since I already
had PopCLI set to the interval I wanted.)

Thanks ed for making this available.Its great! I've noticed
some things that some may want to know...
For those of you who still do workbench, when you try to move
an icon out of its window, it won't leave!!
I've also tried to run "AIR WAR"(Thanks!!!) with mach running but no
go!! It has to be disabled. But it's no problem when you can disable
and enable using hot keys!!
Great program!!

Steve,
Many thanks for the upload of ECSK. I am embarassed after seeing what
it does that I didn't do this for myself a long time ago. It does make it easy
to conditionally set up your environment during a reboot. My startup sequence
now looks like an RSX sysgen :^}

984.23 | Mach12 doesn't seem proportional to me... | MVCAD3::BAEDER | | Sun Jan 03 1988 17:56 | 15 |
| Ed...(re .6)
Maybe I'm dense, but I just don't see the proportional to acceleration
bit...All it seems to do (at least to me) is to divide the number
of "clicks" seen during the move...very similar to the behavior
found in changing the mouse constant in the prefs menu...no matter
how fast I accel/move, and how slowly I return, a given distance
on the pad == dist on the screen...
Now I admit, it does do a lot (source would have been better...allow
us to build the ultimate mouse tool box...) but I just don't think
it adds any thing of value...(just my $.02...if I'm wrong..call
me on it!)

| Y'know, after reading .23, I went and tried Quickmouse (found on
Gizmos v2.0) and sure enuf, their mouse accelerator seems more like
the Vaxstation effect, ie, if you accelerate the mouse quickly,
the stroke needed to traverse the screen is reduced.
I haven't heard any comments on Mach12 being broken in this regard,
but who knows...
There is a new version called Mach14 on PLINK which I'll post here.
It includes a tiny menu bar clock plus some extra stuff.

984.25 | Mach12 & WordPerfect | CELSST::FISHER | John Fisher @RTP | DTN 367-4451 | Mon Jan 04 1988 22:48 | 18 |
| For those of you who have not yet tried this with WordPerfect...
Mach12 works great, but the programmers for WordPerfect obviously
do not understand the Amiga Intuition environment. (Even the
WordPerfect support person for the Amiga indicated that due to the
PC/MS-DOS heritage of the product.... it probably never will really
work as best as possible with WordPerfect). Not that I am complaining,
just that Mach12 has fun switching back and forth between all of
the WordPerfect windows. Just to make it even more interesting,
WP tries to do some automatic switching for you at the same time
(What a Mess!).
Of course, the automatic window switching can be disabled, but that's
half the fun with Mach12.
Sigh, just goes to show TANSTAAFL lives! (Translation: There Ain't
No Such Thing As A Free Lunch).
