966.0. "68010 on A500" by WJG::GUINEAU (W. John Guineau III) Thu Dec 10 1987 14:28

What does it take to replace the 68000 with a 68010 on the Amiga 500?

Look in the ads in Computer Shopper. You should be able to find
    a 68010 chip for somewhere between $20.00 and $50.00.

Disassemble the A500 to reveal the motherboard. The 68000 can be
removed by gently prying it out with a thin screwdriver or nail
file. Gently press in the 68010 (it's pin compatible) and you're
    in business.

I've had a 68010 in my Amiga for almost a year now. There are only
    two or three compatibility problems...

    TextCraft Plus
    Barbarian
    Transformer

TextCraft Plus can be run with a small patch called 'DECIGEL', which
traps a particular instruction that the 68010 finds offensive.
Almost all programmers have had the upward-compatibility point driven
home by now, so I don't expect to see many problems in the future.

I think that everyone should pop in a 68010 whenever they have the
machine open. In general, the speed increase will be modest, 5-8%,
but in some cases it can reach 50%. It takes only a few minutes
to do the upgrade, so go for it.

If you look in LEDS3::USER6:[ACCIARDI.AMIGA] you'll see an archive
called '68010.arc'. This is a collection of hints, tips, and includes
    the tiny Decigel program.

Already have one!

I heard there was some patch to (workbench?) that can be done in the startup
file to "fix" the incompatability (Apparently the 68010 interrupt stack call
frame differs from the 68000)

Got it! Thanks!
