947.0. "500 Pwr Supply Noise" by JANIS::DONAHUE () Mon Dec 07 1987 08:21

Well, I received by Amiga 500 last week and got a chance to dive
into it this weekend. I came across a disturbing noise coming from
the power supply box which is in the power cord line. After about
15 minutes of usage, the box starts making a hissing noise. This
noise goes away when there is activity on the disk or the machine
is doing some work and comes back when there is nothing going on.

Do any other 500 owners have this noise? It is quite pronouced and
bothersome. I think I got a lemon, or I'm disapointed in the quality
    of this machine or both.

I have had my 500 for over a month and have had it on for hours
on end without any noise from the power supply. The first one I
brought home had a bad PS, I brought it back it back they gave me
an entirely new setup, no charge, no hassle (they:== omnitek/NH).

    bring it back... good luck

Sorry to tell you but I'm sitting here on my 500 and it doesn't
make these noises. Quiet is the only thing I hear.. until I do a
    disk search...but thats normal...Don't be disapointed, I think you'll
find after this is resolved for you, you'll be more than happy with
it like the rest of us...

A friend of mine works at an Amiga store in Worcester. He told
me that about 50% of early A500 power supplys were bad. Some were
so marginal that they'd blow just by plugging in an external drive.

Sorry about your problem. I'm sure that 3 rd parties will be supplying
much beefier supplies for the A500. Might be a worthwhile investment.

Look into the after market supplies. I believe I mentioned it here before, but
the one from Phoenix is excellent. Has 3 switched outlets on the back which
are surge protected, supplies 6 amps (5v) as opposed to the Amigas 4, etc..

I've had this P/S for a month or so and have been quite pleased with it.
I have a 2nd floppy, added memory, SCSI controller, etc hung off it with no
problems.
