I must be losing my mind. I just got finished convincing myself that I was not going to upgrade to an A2000 until there was some wonder gadget that just couldn't be had for an A1000. Well, I stopped into the Software Shop yesterday to get a copy of the NewTek disks (amazing video by the way, could have been an Amiga commercial) and Moe made me an interesting offer... I give the Software Shop: My bare A1000 (I'll remove the 68010 uP) My A1010 Floppy My 20 MB SupraDrive $1100 and Moe will give me: An A2000 with 2 floppies installed in the box A MiniScribe 20 MB HD in the 5 1/4 bay, w/ the 2090 controller An adaptor to install my Starboard 2 meg in the A2000 I'll assume that the prices on the A2000 stuff are: 1 meg A2000 $1995 20 MB Drive $ 325 HD Controller $ 250 Internal Floppy $ 150 ----- $2720 This means that Moe is crediting me $1620 on my current A1000 setup. Remember, I'll keep my 2 meg RAM board for use in the A2000. OK, all you upgrader ne'er do well types... is this a good deal? How does it compare to the deals you made? Should I make an early Christmas of it? Call the divorce lawyer to start dividing up the estate? By the way, the Software Shop had 15 new A2000s in boxes. 5 went out the door in one day. They also have a dozen bridge boards. Moe also said that there were around 50 new software releases due by Christmas. Ed-I-can't-believe-I'm-seriously-considering-this-on-my-budget-Acciardi

go for it, it sounds like a great deal. the only bad part is that you can't boot from the CBM controller. 20 Meg DMA, 3Meg Ram, 2 Floppy, lots more potential expansion... that could make for a very fun early Christmas. -dave

I just heard that the upgrade deal has been extended until December 31, so some of the urgency is gone. Also, I can figure out how to pay for this thing. Several dislikes about the A2000: I think the keyboard is awful! Nice layout, but the keys have no feedback, and the keyboard flexes. I know keyboards are like shoes; they fit after a while. I also heard that there are some subtle timing differences in the keyboard control chip that has caused compatibility problems in some games. The placement of the mouse ports in the front of the machine makes it impossible to push the keyboard flush against the CPU. Other than that, it's a beautiful package. I was considering a Hurricane 14.3 MHz CPU board, but hell, it's fast enough, and I believe the same Hurricane board is used on all three models. Thanks for the opinions. Moe must like me, since no matter how I look at it, it seems like a great deal. Ed.

re: .5 the only software i've found so far that doesn't like the A2000 keyboard timing are Psygnosis titles. I guess they have a standard set of bad programming tricks they like to do.. (heard Barbarian also doesn't like the 68010). -dave |
