928.0. "LJ250 and AMIGA" by SHIRE::GANGUILLET () Thu Nov 26 1987 04:47

    Does anybody tried or plan to use an LJ250
    with the amiga, I think it can be a really good printer
    since it is cheap and has a good resolution.

    It means that somebody as to do a driver,
    would it be difficult to do ?

    Cheap? Guess its all relative.

    At our local club meeting (AMUC - AMiga Users of Calgary) the owner
    of one of the local shops did a presentation of what he saw at COMDEX.
    Included was a sample output (self test) of a new ink jet printer
    that the big C= will apparently be releasing, maybe as soon as
    December, which is a buy out from HP. Sound familiar, well the
    output looked just like the one from an LJ250. The shop owner said
    he expected the price to come in at about $1100.00 CDN ("don't quote
    me") which would mean that C= would also have to supply a driver,
    hmmmmmmm sounds interesting and cheaper than the big D.

928.3Driver should be available already!OASIS2::BERNARDJohn Bernard DTN 288-6622Fri Nov 27 1987 12:0511
Driver for the HP PaintJet Printer should work. This is available on Plink or
on the latest ProWrite disk. I believe I also saw it on Draw-Plus.

The printer uses HP-PCL protocol as well as quite a few others. At last
check, the employee price should be under 1k. High? Low? Depends on what
you want and can afford. The Zerox looks good as do some others. I'm going to
give our own a try first.

928.4Sample Output RequestKAOO01::LAPLANTEThu Dec 01 1988 10:5315
    My brother-in-law who is an Amiga buff introduced me to them and
    I have since bought a 500.

    He is heavy into graphics and was wondering what the output from
    an LJ250 looks like.

    Could someone send me a sample at

    Would appreciate it greatly.

    re .4
    I can't send a sample, but from the experience I had using a VAXMATE
    with an LJ250, I was impressed. Excellent color graphics, but maybe
    somebody knows of better.

928.8PostScript support for LJ250ESOCTS::SANFORDWed Dec 07 1988 23:228
    I have seen the PostScript version of the LJ250. The PostScript
    interpreter will run on a VAX and create a color sixel file to
    be sent to the LJ250. The output is very impresive considering
    that PostScript has excellent routines for doing dithering, when
    using different shades of color it is difficult to see any
    dithering.

    This product should be available Q1 FY90.
928.9NEC 5200 vs LJ250 for digitized picturesGIAMEM::LAFLAMMETue Jun 20 1989 16:439
    Does anyone know the comparison between this beast and the NEC 5200
    color dot-matrix? I mean, for picture color representation and
    resolution?

    Can anyone send me a picture (digitized) printed on an LJ?

    Hi Mike,

    I have a 5200 color printer and could send you pictures I printed
    on it. I only have one picture printed on both the NEC and the
    LJ250 and the LJ250 has much more vivid colors. The picture may
    not be representative of what you want to print. Colors simply
    don't mix as nicely on a dot matrix.

    P5200 is a great printer. Ink jet colors will/should always be
    better (IMO). The NEC print driver in WB 1.3 supports densities
    up to 360x360 dots per inch. I find 180x180 to be the one I like
    (see the print densities in the 1.3 manual).

    Send me your mail stop and I'll send you some pictures.

928.11Pages per Cartridge?NAVIER::MELLITZWed May 30 1990 16:4317
    Just got a LJ252, plugged it in, connected the parallel cable that came
    with the LJ252 to the Amiga, selected the HP_PaintJet driver in
    preferances, and it worked with no trouble the first time printing a
    DPaint picture. Wow, that was simple!

    My question is:

    How many color pictures per cartridge on the average are you folks
    experiancing?

    I know on the answer depends on what color content of the material
    you are printing is.

928.12Where did you get the driver?POLAR::RIDGEWed May 30 1990 17:301
    Where did you get the hp_paintJet driver from?
928.13HP_PaintJet Driver on V1.3 ExtrasNAVIER::MELLITZThu May 31 1990 08:4111

    re:-1
    It came on the 1.3 Extras Disk I got with the A2000HD.
    Also ProPage V1.3 replaced it with a "corrected" version...
    what ever that means.

    BTW, PPage dot matrix is output on the LJ252 is quite good. But PSPRINT
    (on the vax side) to a LJ250 on postscript files out of PPage is
    better.

     Are new LJ252s available from employee purchase, or used ones
     through any other employee program used?

     Also, I think there is a paintjet driver on a fish disk.

    re.0 When you mentioned that you had just got an lj250 do you meen
    for your personal use or for work ? In the first case how did yougo
    about in getting it and at what price.

    Sorry but got no ideas on the printing capacities. Only read somewhere
    that it was around 10.000 pages of text more correct info in DECdirect

    I do 20% of my work at home on my Amiga during odd hours.

    Interestingly, I really like DPaint for doing quick architecture
    sketches. I get results faster with this than other tools. Once I firm
    up a sketch, I normally use DECWrite to publish in DEC std fashion.
    BTW, I think DECWrite is a better tool than PPage (an opinion). I
    should post my comments on the under the PPage subject at a later time.

    Actually, the feature I like most about the LJ is most understated.
    It's   Q U I E T ! ! !  You may not notice the Digital cubical mazes,
    but in a home office the LJ is most civilized.

    The cost from IEG is about $530 (MLP from the DECDirect book is around
    $1800.

928.17Lots of pictures from a cartidgeRIPPLE::LUKE_TEFri Jun 01 1990 12:1911
    It seems that the Employee Purchase plan had the LJ250 for about
    $800-900. I called a long time ago when it first came out. Then
    I got my manager to buy me one for home after I showed him what
    great transparencies and customer drawings I could do.

    I don't know how many pictures you get from an ink cartridge, but
    if you don't do colored backgrounds (for example like my transparencies
    and network diagrams I do) you get a lot! If you're digitizing
    pictures and printing them out or using it to print banners, you
    get slightly less than a lot.

928.18Printing to LJ252 from VAX through AmigaLEDS::SKRALYSam Skraly, DTN 291-7244Fri Jun 08 1990 14:1911
	How does one print out text files from a VAX to an LJ252 hooked up
	to the Amiga's parallel port (Amiga is running HANDSHAKE to talk to
	the VAX)?

	In other words, I want to log in to a VAX through the AMIGA and be
	able to say something like:

	$LJ252PRINT <vms_textfilename>

	Thanks,
	Sam
928.19LEDS::ACCIARDILarger than life, and twice as uglyFri Jun 08 1990 16:326

    Handshake will do a screen dump from the leftmost (Project) menu. To
    dump an entire text file, you have to select 'Ascii capture' from the
    Capture menu and then print out the file from a shell or dirutil.

    Ed.

    Below is vtprint.com - a DCL com file I use to send pictures from VMS to
    the terminal or terminal emulator's printer port. Any decent VT
    terminal emulator should support a printer port since that is part of
    the terminal they are emulating. I've not used Handshake so I don't
    know if it offers this.

    To use:

    Hiya,

    Could someone please send me an example document produced on an LJ250.
    Something DEC orientated would be good, then perhaps I can justify
    taking one home for slide production!!

    Many thanks,

    I use an A500 at home and a LJ252 with the Extra 1.3 printer driver
    for HP Paintjet. Two questions:

    1. Is there a way to print the PPpage Postcript output directly to my
       LJ252 ? I have only succeeded to get a lot of crap so far, may be
       I should have an enhanced driver ?

    2. Is there a way to load a custom font on an LJ252 and to use it
       instead of the default called by preference ? The manual suggests
       that this should be possible but so far, I have only been able to
       send specific print commands from the keyboard.

    Thanks in advance for any clues about this.
