895.1 | How about TCP/IP ? | CELSST::FISHER | John Fisher @NCO | DTN 367-4453 | Thu Nov 12 1987 13:49 | 11 |
| Mixing work & fun again ??...
I am not all that certain about the MS-DOS angle. It might work,
but there are real chances that it would have problems...
Another approach might be to use TCP/IP. I remember seeing a third
party hardware/software package for the Amiga that supported a TCP/IP
ethernet connection.
Hope that helps.

| As to how modified is the BIOS part... See note 188
MSDOS can be found in the emulator (Transformer - A1000), in the
Sidecar as well as in a A2000 option.
To further confuse choices, Pheonix BIOS has announced plans to
support 80386 MSDOS applications under the 680x0 (Amiga&MAC). The
original Amiga came with instructions on transfering files with
a Sun Workstation. [How does a Sun Workstation get connected to
a VAX?]
Since AT cards are supported in the A2000 card cage, maybe off the
shelf approaches will work. Good luck!

| Ameristar makes several boards for native Amiga networking. They
support NFS (Sun's network protocol) which definitely connects to
VAXen.
I don't know the number offhand, but they are based in long island
(516).

895.4 | A VAX to backup up an Amiga cluster? | MEIS::ZIMMERMAN | Angry goose! Angry, angry goose! | Tue Nov 17 1987 11:48 | 14 |
| I'd be interested in knowing what the customer was doing with the
Amigas. My guess is that businesses that use Amigas do more
interesting things on average than companies that pick PC's, say.
Last month's AmigaWorld featured Amigas in business. One article
described how three small businesses uses them: a kite manufacturer
uses DeluxePaint to design kites and illustrate their catalog; a TV
production facility uses a 1000 for animation; a consulting firm uses
Amigas because they're cheaper than IBM's or Apples for color
business graphics.
So what's your customer up to?

| I can't tell you too much about what my customer plans to do because
it's confidential. Basically, he wants to create advertisements
using very sophisticated graphics on the Amiga 2000. These ads are
then sent to a Sony Frame Creation unit where output suitable for
broadcasting (tv) is created. He wants to use a VAX as a central
storage medium.

895.6 | A point to consider | HIT::WHERRY | Servant of Cthulhu | Tue Nov 17 1987 19:24 | 18 |
| Just poking my nose in here to add something which may be important
or unimportant. I am NOT aware of any means of transferring files
from the amiga filesystem into the MS-DOS filesystem of the
bridge-board, would someone with a bridge-borad care to comment
on this? If this is true (and the BYTE preview mentioned that there
was no file-transfer capability at the time of the preview), then
you could only NET the amiga half rather than the PC part of an
Amiga 2000. Do you know if the customer will be running ULTRIX,
Unix BSD (might as well run Ultrix), or VMS... I know that Ameristar
also sells TCP/IP for thier amiga ethernet card. I don't know whether
that falls under being part of NFS etc.
I don't know whether this point had been considered so I thought
I would mention it. BTW, I am intentionally ignoring transfering
files via NULL-MODEM cable from the amiga side to the PC side (assuming
you put a serial card and set it for COMM2)...

| I seem to remember reading something in Comp_sys_amiga about
networking, ameristar ethernet boards, NFS, TCP/IP, DECNET, etc.
But since the notesfile got reset recently, I don't know if it is
still around....

| Dos-to-Dos from Central Point Software will read any IBM or Atari
ST format 3 1/2" disk directly. Would this suffice to move files
from MS-Dos to AmigaDOS?

I've been told that the bridgeboard comes with lots of utilities
to move files between the two systems. But, my memory could be
going...
Re: .*
A company called Tollysoft is porting DECnet to the Amiga. They bought
porting rights to a Macintosh version of DECnet and are busy modifying it.
I don't know how far along they are.

Perhaps some news to Commodore for a change.
I just tested the ACORN RISC development board with a 3Com Ethernet
board on the Bridgecard side of the A2000 bus. It works flawlessly. The
Bridgecard acts as an I/O controller for the Ethernet and screen/keyboard.
This a very nice arrangement. The ACORN screems, and barely bothers the
Amiga side at all. As I mentioned previously, I also have NFS on the Amiga
side of the Bridgecard. I had to rape an IBM pc to try this out, since we
are still waiting for more ACORN boards (like mine). When I do get my board,
I will have two Ethernet hoses going into the A2000. I shudder to think what
I could with this! This is getting strange. Now I know why this is called
Janus. Now if I could just adapt Matt's shell to talk amiga/unix to the IBM...

My wife's company is in the process of porting the Mac product TSSnet to
the Amiga. This provides DECnet End-node support, along with virtual terminal,
VMS Mail, network file transfer and remote file access. TSSnet on the Mac
is being marketed by Alisa Systems. It has not yet been determined how
the Amiga product will be marketed - discussions are underway with
Thursby Software Systems, the developers of TSSnet. Also not clear
is what the demand for an Amiga version will be - feel free to send
me email if you have opinions on this. The Amiga version will have
asynch DDCMP support, and discussions have started with Ameristar
to get information to allow support for their Ethernet board.
Ameristar's phone number is (516) 698-0834 , by the way.

Ameristar doesn't sell Zorro I boards any more (don't know if they
ever did, actually), only Zorro II.
I know of a DECNET port to the Amiga, but it won't be RSN. I think it
will use the Ameristar board but might use serial line DDCMP as well.
