| Yes, that is a good deal. I have a friend who just paid $850 for
a used Amiga with a monitor (Memory Location).

845.2 | best of both worlds | CURE::WISNER | Paul Wisner, AI Demonstrations | Fri Oct 23 1987 17:39 | 4 |
| If you get Flight Simulator, I think you'd be able to play a two
player came by connecting the ST to the 1000. You'd have to buy
two copies of FS though. I think there is PD software to convert
ST pictures to Atari and visa versa.

| I'd say that is a marvelous deal. When I got mine it was about
$1100 excluding the monitor, and shortly thereafter I understand
Commodore sent the price through the roof so that is probably over
75% off new. The only problem you might have is that, I understand,
CA has discontinued the 1000 series (or maybe they haven't. I keep
forgetting. So do they, I think.), so hardware might be hard to
find a few years down the road. Enough people own 1000s now (honk
if you have a 1000) that there shouldn't be any problem for a long
while though.
As for other accessories, GET AN EXTERNAL DRIVE! Trust me, I cannot
emphasize this enough. I think Abel Supply sells them for $200
(although I am probably wrong). Check under DIR/TITLE=ABEL to find
a price list. That should cover the basics. There is a note here
where all users list their system configs (note 20 I think). You
might want to flip through there just to see what everyone else
has.

| 1) Actually, it is note 3 that has the system configurations, not
note 20.
2) Check the times on the question and replies. How is that for
fast service? When I started my reply there were no others.
by the time I finished, there were two before me.

845.5 | ST Color monitors work! | LEDS::ACCIARDI | | Fri Oct 23 1987 17:59 | 18 |
| A little know fact is that the Amiga works just fine with the ST
color monitor. Redmond cable can build an adaptor cable.
The early ST color monitors (Hitachi) were outstanding, far superior
to the Amiga 1080 monitor. This, coupled with it's smaller size,
gave birth to some of the early, untrue claims that the ST RGB output
was much better than the Amigas.
Later ST color monitors are made by Goldstar, and, while a bit better
than the Amiga 1080, are no match for the early ST models. Maybe
they'll become collectors items?
There is no way that I know of to adapt an Amiga to the ST monochrome
monitor; the bandwidths, scan rate, etc are all wrong.
All in all, an A1000 for $300 is a steal.

845.6 | Too High | WALTZ::BOWEN | | Mon Oct 26 1987 08:27 | 3 |
| Well I disagree, I think $300 is way too much for the system and
advise you not to buy. By the way, what's your friend's name and
address.

| what you need depends on what you plan to use it for... most games
run just fine with just the internal drive. And you can hook the
color composite out to the video-in of a VCR to display it on a
TV. Not great video, but that will give you more time, and lots
of incentive, to look for the "best" monitor for it.
You should also consider getting a second disk drive. Copying
880K disks is a lot of disk swapping on a single disk drive.
$300 is a good price for a used A1000 currently.
