| 827.1 | So Who's Done It? | DICKNS::MACDONALD | WA1OMM Listening 224.28 | Wed Oct 21 1987 16:00 | 6 |
| | Sheeesh ... no less than 20 people downloaded EIGHT.ARC to chnage
    their systems into 8 colors workbenches. BTW it only works with
    A1000s. So, let's hear how it went. Anyone successful?

    You know for sure that it works when ANYTIME pops up in eight color
    mode on Workbench!

| 827.2 | what, me lazy? | LEDS::ACCIARDI |  | Wed Oct 21 1987 16:08 | 4 |
| | I got a little intimidated (read: lazy) when I saw all the associated
    work I had to do to get it to work. Maybe this weekend when the
    wife is sawing logs late at night...

| 827.3 | It's really easy !! | DDMAIL::ANDREWS | Just living a life of illusion | Wed Oct 21 1987 17:44 | 14 |
| | I DID IT!!! It's not nearly as hard as I thought. All you have
    to do is patch the kickstart disk. Then run the setcolor program.

    The hardest part was remembering to take write protect off the
    kickstart disk when I was patching it. ;-)

    I found that the rest of the directions were for if you wanted to
    change the icons you already have. Just copy the sample ones to
    the root directory of your workbench disk, and open the disk.

    I still have to find a way to change the icons that I use, and figure
    out how to animate them.

    The 8 color Workbench should use 48K vs 32K for a 4 color version.

    I get a message that says invalid login info at remote note or
    something to that effect. Could someone reply with the command
    they use to get files from here? Maybe I am typing something in
    error..

| | Thanks for the info I was able to get the file. I was using a batch
    copy file that which apparently did not like the pauly"amiga" node.
    I then tried the plain copy command and it worked.

    thanks again...Steve

| 827.13 | Why WORKBENCH "really" only has 4 colors | LABC::GRAY |  | Thu Dec 03 1987 18:23 | 19 |
|  |
         Note:

    	    The Amiga's custom graphic coprocessors are specially designed
    	    to handle two-bitplane-deep screen refreshing 100% transparent
    	    to the operation of the 68000. If you increase the number
            of bitplanes displayed in any given Amiga screen, the Amiga
    	    graphics engine will take slightly longer to refresh the
    	    screen and thus will lock the 68000 off the buss during
            time when it is able to use it.

    	    But then again, just think of how the poor Atari ST owners
    	    feel... :-)

       I don't see any follow up to Phil's request for a disk sector
       editor (perhaps he was answered by mail!?).

       I would also like to try this out, but haven't a disk sector
       editor at my disposal. I have looked through most of the "public"
       directories, but couldn't find DISKX, or DISKED, or anything else
       that resembled either of them.

    look for Sectorama on one of the more recent FISH or other public

| | Using 8 colors is great but....

    I have to reload kickstart each time I will to restart my machine,so
    pressing ctrl-a-a ( or the infamous GURU) and then the kistart logo...
    Is it correct or did I miss something ?
    The loading of 8 colored kickstart is ok each time and I have the
    8 colors....

| 827.19 | Update the checksum | DDMAIL::ANDREWS | How come nobody told *ME*? | Fri Jan 08 1988 17:49 | 7 |
|  |     Phil,

    You forgot to do the part where it says to update the checksum.
    That's the reason you must start from scratch. It thinks Kickstart
    is corrupted.
