| I agree wholeheartedly! This is a marvelous game. (Actually, I
got it for $18 at a bookstore <*chuckle*>).
I have only one (silly) question:
My copy didn't come with a rulebook or even a reference card.
I know there are instructions on-line, but they are a little
sketchy (esp. about hooking w/ modem). I mean I still love
the game, but am I missing a vital piece?

| The online instructions are pretty skimpy, but my friend and I were
able to connect on the first try. We've put in about 10 hours over
the phone so far. I'm not sure if we're friends anymore.
I found that I had to set DTR on my modem to get it to dial out
through this program. Also, the program automatically puts up an
ATDT Hayes prefix. Unfortunately, I only have pulse dialing in
Grafton, MA. No sweat, I just loaded up NewZap and searched for
the string ATDT and replaced it with ATDP. Now it works great.
This game is putting a strain on my family life.

| I agree. This game is great! I play vs. the computer. I had
always wondered where all the men that I'm supposed to pick up
are, until I started blasting random buildings. I never knew
that some of them are prisons. I also found the flag for the
first time.
The lack of documentation is a pain initially, but they had to
cut corners somewhere to make it so cheap.
Is there anyway to pause a game?

799.4 | Damn the mines, full speed ahead! | ACE::OLIVAS | | Thu Oct 15 1987 16:34 | 14 |
| Only problem with prisons is you have to go back to drop the wimps
off at the aid station. (I do so love the *SPLAT* sound of enemy
soldiers beneath my treads, though.)
The only real objection to the game it the BLOODY MINES! How many
times have you been merrily blasting away at a wall to the south,
holding your joystick down as though to increase the force of the
shots from your cannon. The wall crumbles and you charge ahead,
only to realize, "Oh, sh*t, I dropped another <*** BOOM ***>!".
A keypress would be a better way to drop them.
Only problem with modem play for me is that I have an old Racal-Vadic
which does not support Hayes. Pity...

799.5 | an excellent two player game, lousy one player game | CURE::WISNER | Paul Wisner, AI Demonstrations | Wed Nov 11 1987 11:35 | 8 |
| I bought FirePower last night. I *hated* it in one player mode,
I was sorry I bought it. Then... I tried a two player game and
fell in love. FirePower is the greatest two player game I know
of. We spend nearly four hours blasting away, at the end of the
night our hands were sore. I can't wait to play again! It's
a shame that play is so poor in one player mode. But for only $21
you can't beat it as a two player game. I have not yet tried it
with my modem.

| Question on playing of Firepower. I haven't found the flag yet,
but when I do:
1.) Is the flag in plain sight or do you have to go into a
building to get it?
2.) How do you actually capture the flag? Do you just drive
up to it or fire at it or what?
|
799.8 | FLAG | AIKITS::WISNER | | Tue Apr 19 1988 15:39 | 2 |
| It's inside a building. It shows up as a flashing dot on your radar.
You drive over it to capture it. You must then return to your base.

yeah, blow up the building it resides in, and you'll see it. Then run over
it. Note that if you get blown up while in possession, the flag is dropped
where you left it...

799.10 | Mapping | REGENT::DITTMER | | Wed May 04 1988 22:30 | 7 |
| I have a few questions about the layout of the game:
-Does the map "wrap around" meaning if you go off one edge, you
come out on the other side of the map?
-is the enemy base organized, like all within one wall that surrounds
the entire base?

| The map wraps around.
I *think* that is one wall the surrounds the entire base. I've
noticed that both bases are symetrical to each other.

799.12 | Win! | REGENT::DITTMER | | Fri Jun 10 1988 20:07 | 13 |
| I have a way to win the game **without cheating**: I run around
my own camp, blowing up b and returning my men to the medi-center
for extra men (about 2 or three, which is 30 to 45 men), then I
go out and explore, blowing up everything on my way, so I can find
my way back to camp (use radar once in range), and once you find
the flag building, a very large building which must be blown up
twice. There is one decoy building, which looks exactly like the
real one. Pick up the flag, return to camp following your path of
destruction and return to your bunker. You can win almost every
time this way.
Good luck!

799.13 | Only two different two-player maps?!?!?!? | REGENT::DITTMER | | Sun Jun 26 1988 21:26 | 12 |
| I just bought a second controller yesterday, and I was playing
two-player FP, and I love it. Then I played again, and it was just
as fun. Then when I played again, it gave me the same map as the
first game,flag in the same position!!! I have reset it about five
times, and it comes up with two different maps! This is a good game,
but only two different maps? What good is it if you know exactly
whare the flag is? Please tell me there is a bug in my game, because
I'm willing to get another one. :^(

| OK, It's there. I checked it out last night and it looks pretty
good. It lets you modify the existing maps or create your own.
It looks to be a major deal to create your own maps as it is a big
area. The program itself seems to be kinda slow initially, but
it is doing a lot of work. Interestingly enough, the author wrote
it in basic then compiled it with the A/C Basic compiler.

799.21 | Trouble with making the modem stuff work... | CSC32::J_PARSONS | Like Lesser Birds on the 4 Winds... | Thu Dec 15 1988 18:40 | 9 |
| I made multiple attempts to play FP over the modem last night withhout
success. I was able to hook up with the guy I was playing just fine
and we could send messages, etc. over the terminal side but when
I hit 'start' on my side the game just hung on both sides. Could
someone who does this regularly offer any help?
Both modems involved are Digital DF242's (Scholar Plus). Also, the
game would only dial the modem at 1200, is there any way to make
it work at 2400?
