777.0. "Imagewriter II on AMIGA?" by AMULET::HALVERSON (This space intentionally filled in) Tue Oct 06 1987 10:31

Has anyone hooked up an APPLE (I know I said the "A" word)ImagewriterII
to the Amiga? It is the recommended printer for use with the Prowrite
software. I was wodering how the quality of the color graphics
were and what type of cable is necessary. Also what printer driver
    within preferences would you use?

    thanks for any info..Steve

Gee... I thought that the ImageWriters WERE Preferences printers,
although I can't say for sure without checking.

ProWrite doesn't do such a great job with the stock printer drivers.
New Horizons is considering adding PostScript and/or custom drivers in
    a future enhancement.

I believe that the ImageWriter II is a serial printer, so you will
tie up your serial port. There is a driver for it that comes with
    Workbench 1.2.

Thanks for the info. I am looking to buy a color graphics printer
in the near future and I just want to make sure that I get the most
    printer for the buck.

If you want color graphics, get an ink jet printer. Printers like
the ImageWriter II, Epson JX-80, Juki 5520 can do color, but not
very well...plus they are SLOW. They are best at B+W printing and
    text.

How much color printing are you going to be doing, really? You
might want to take screen shots with a polaroid camera instead,
or have slides made my Image Set in San Francisco. The printer
output, in color, has little practical use, because of the low grade
translation of the file from the screen display.

Most of the printing would be B/W and color text. With several
different fonts. The la50 I now have does not work well with the
prowrite software as well as other software I have. It works fine
printing in draft mode but will not reproduce the different fonts
    very well.

If you do buy an Imagewriter II, make sure you get a null modem
to go between the Apple cable and your Amiga. My friend got
one a few months ago and we had a couple of extremely exciting
weeks trying to figure out why it wouldn't work before I hacked
up a null modem for him. He is pleased with the quality, and I
agree. I don't much care for how slow it is, though.

Is it slow in printing text as well as graphics?

There was a test of these printers last year in AmigaWorld. The
ImageWriter tested faster than the Epson clones. From what I've
seen (my brother has a Mac with an ImageWriter II), it prints graphics
faster than my Juki 5520. Mine waits a little after every line
    of graphics. The ImageWriter doesn't.
