770.0. "Hard disk for the 500?" by KYOA::WEGER (Bruce Weger) Sun Oct 04 1987 01:33

I really miss not having a hard drive and I would love to rush out
and puchase a nice 20meg unit. The rub is that I own a 500.

The only manufacturer that even hinted at providing one for the
500 is an outfit named "Expansion Technologies Inc." It looks like
a nice unit ( there's a small picture of it in the "hole in the
head" ads in the Amy rags). It will hold an additional 4 meg of
ram, a floppy drive and room for a 5.25" hard disk!

My local dealer (in N.J.) recomended mail order since they can't
even hold on to their floor units... 500's are really moving!

Although I plan to contact Expansion Tech. regarding this, I'd
appreciate hearing from anyone out there who might provide insight
or guidance regarding ET and add-on hard disks for the 500.

Christmas is real close now... ;')

Re: .0

Supra has advertised that they are doing a hard disk for the Amiga500.
An ad I saw (in AmigaWorld?) showed a picture of the drive plugged into
a 500. The controller is wedged shaped to match the 500's case, and
plugs into the expansion buss on the left. A cable then connects the
controller to the disk device itself.

I believe that the 500 Supra disk will accept a memory card, just like
the Amiga 1000 Supra disk does.

Call Supra for details.

I have seen the following products for the Amiga 500. All may not
be shipping yet, however, I would expect to see them before Christmas.

PHD 500 Hard Disk Drive 20 or 40 Mb drive
    	 True SCSI interface command set.
    	 Autoconfiguration compatibility.
100% compatible with all Amiga software, including 1.2 Workbench
    	 External pass-through expansion capability.
Internal power supply, capable of driving external RAM cards
    	 Comes pre-formatted with PD software
Transfer rate to 4mb per second
    	 Access time averages 35ms
Seven device expansion allowed by SCSI
    	 $949 for PHD 500, 20 meg. $1399 for PHD 500, 40 meg.
    	 919-632-2150 (Kansas)

Pacific Peripherals A500 SCSI controller $249
    				   with 20 meg drive $895
    				   with 50 meg drive $1295
    	415-651-1905 (Fremont,CA)

    	Supra 20mb for the A500 $995
    	503-967-9081 (Albany,OR)

My predicition is that the A500 will surpass the A1000 in h/w support
within the next three months. Note that BYTE-BY-BYTE has discontinued
their A1000 PAL Jr but has started producing memory cards for the
    A500.
