747.0. "EDT on the AMIGA???" by OASIS2::BERNARD (Have Gun - Will Travel) Fri Sep 25 1987 20:36

Is there an "EDT style" editor around for the amiga amnywhere? I have uEMACS
but would like to duplicate EDT on the A500 if possible. The other alternative
get some kind of key redefinition/macro to make an existing editor "LOOK" like
EDT.  Same difference..

Any thoughts...???

747.1Let's put SEDT on the Amiga!LABC::GRAYFri Sep 25 1987 21:007

    We really neet to put something powerfull like SEDT on the Amiga!
    The sources for this are described in the SW_TOOLS_CATALOG (press
    Select or KP7)...

    I have used this on the Rainbow and the VAX... it is very powerfull...
    something between EDT and TPU/EMACS....
747.2DARE I SAY "TRY UEDIT"POLAR::GOSLINGKANATA MFG I.S.Fri Sep 25 1987 21:3127
       I spoke (ems) to Anker regarding SEDT for the AMIGA a while back.
       He indicated that it was on his list - but low on it! He wanted
       to see if his ATARI version bore fruit before spending time and
       money on an AMIGA version. Given DBW's legal problems with his
       ray tracing program, I wonder if a commercial SEDT will become a
       reality. I also understand that DEC is looking at "sanctioning"
       SEDT which one must assume will further sink the bureaucratic
       hooks into Anker and this product (my own opinion of coures). I
       am still keeping my fingers crossed of course.

       However, I still think that you folks who would like an SEDT/EDT
       style editor should take a serious look at Uedit. I have used
       SEDT for quite awhile now and despite honest efforts have not been
       able to make the transition to emacs (no wars please). After
       trying TxEd, Scribble!, and TextCrap I have found Uedit to be the
       closest thing to SEDT on the AMIGA, and if I had the time I'm sure
       I could tailor it even more to look and function almost identical
       to SEDT.

       I won't go into details here (check previous notes on this
       product) but if anyone is interested I will upload the latest
       version in arc format.

747.3uEMACS/uEdit (Try it uLikeit)16BITS::KRUGERFri Sep 25 1987 23:138
    uEdit has a really good rep. but remember you can bind uEMACS to
    do 99% of the things you're used to anyway. After all, I'm assuming
    it's the keypad you miss, not the macro programming. That is, to
    my mind, the one weakness of uEMACS -- it is not as flexible or
    powerful to program. Incidentally, where can I get uEdit. Is it
    on the net?

747.4Uedit on net, Tried DME??MPGS::BAEDERSat Sep 26 1987 02:1918
    re: .2,3

    Uedit.arc is on the net...both in DBW's amiga area (see his notes
    on various topics for exact location), and im my "clone" of his...

    I have CVTARC'd my files for download by xmodem, but they can easily
    be converted back...

    		mpgs::user3:[baeder.wecker.arc]uedit.arc

    I haven't gotten to it yet, since I use DME (Matt Dillon's editor),
    and like it a lot...(again, no wars, but it does do some nifty things
    like shrink a window to an icon, and in the spirit of tpu/emacs/et.al.
    it has commands you bind to key combinations (even the mouse buttons)

    If the arc file not in the above area yet, will be soon...

747.5RS232 Editors?DEBIT::RAVANSat Sep 26 1987 18:494
    I would like to use a VT220 connected to our Amiga to do editing.
    Are there any PD serial port editors available?

	If memory serves me Steve Drew had it last...

    I join the others in recommending UEDIT. In fact, I think it's one
    of the best (flexible) editors around, I think... though I find
    the default key bindings very unusual.

    I did a somewhat EDT-like version last spring, but Rick has released
    new versions since, and I'd like to redo it. The very latest version
    is ieven supposed to support multinational characters..

    And BTW, you can shrink UEdit into an icon also.

     re: .2

    	Would Anker permit others to port the SEDT code to Amiga? My
        recollection was that there is only one or two system-specific
        modules in it. With all of the VT features of the CON: device,
        I would think this port would almost be trivial.

        Is SEDT to become a commercial product at some point? I thought
        it was PD? If I remember, I think there was some statement
        in the docs that the source would be distributed only to DECies.
747.9SEDT/ST Costs MoneyTLE::RMEYERSRandy MeyersTue Sep 29 1987 17:446
Re: .8

Send mail to Anker to find out for sure, but SEDT is now commercial.
About a year ago, Anker was given permission to sell SEDT for the ST.
If he is managing to make money off the ST port, he probably wouldn't
like the idea of a third party PD port to the Amiga.

       Randy is right - contacting Anker directly is your best bet. The
       time I did correspond with him he indicated that he would be
       willing to let someone else do the work as long as it was
       understood that it would be a commercial product and that he,
       Anker, would want the lions share of the profits.

747.11public domain please!LABC::GRAYThu Oct 01 1987 19:1513
    SEDT is great, but I wouldn't want to get involved with some sort
    of commercial venture over porting it to the Amiga. We need to
    find (or make) a real good Public Domain portable EDT editor for
    internal use only... Maybe we could port real EDT? The current
    VAX version probably uses all those funky EDIT MACRO instructions,
    but there must be an old PDP-11 version kicking around somewhere
    waiting to find a home on a 68k? (The 68k is a spin off of the
    PDP isn't it?)

    Has anyone ever heard of an EDT-interface for MicroGNU EMACS? I
    understand that this is available for the Amiga...

    also, where can we find a copy of the PD Uedit stuff?

747.13EDT is coded in BLISSSAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterFri Oct 02 1987 07:568
    re: .11--EDT is coded almost entirely in BLISS. Most of it is common
    between the PDP-11 and the VAX. The only parts not coded in BLISS
    are the system interface modules for the various PDP-11 operating
    systems.

    Does anybody have a BLISS compiler for the Amiga? If so it would
    be simple to port EDT to the Amiga.

747.14UEDIT V2.2POLAR::GOSLINGKANATA MFG I.S.Fri Oct 02 1987 12:1815
       I just took a look at the UEDIT.ARC and as I suspected (given the
       file date) it is V2.0. The latest version that I know of, and
       have, is V2.2C which has some bug fixes and a number of additional
       features. I assume it is that latest as I am a registered user
       (it's Shareware) and I haven't heard from the "author" of any
       later update.

       This evening, I will upload it, and other related files, to:

747.15V2.3 should be outROZETT::SANTIAGOSlidin dwn the razorblade of lifeFri Oct 02 1987 13:1619
    I just got a flyer from Rick announcing 2.3. It has more
    "word-processing" features (his words) and fixes one thing
    which bugged me for a LONG time: tabs can now be used as TABS
    instead of being displayed as boxes.

    If there's interest I'll extract and type in the relevant parts
    of the flyer.

    #define FLAME 0.5		/* 1.0 for full throttle */

    Rick seems to be taking the concept of "Shareware" to new and
    unheard of limits. He's coming out with new versions every 3-4
    months and charging $20 for upgrading to each one. UEdit is
    also getting *big*... last month I decided I couldn't justify
    it any more. Does anyone else feel likewise?

747.16uEdit slow to start?16BITS::KRUGERFri Oct 02 1987 14:207
    I just tried it last night, and what really bugged me is the speed
    (or lack thereof) of getting into the editor. It can be bindable
    out the wazoo, but if it takes 20 seconds every time I feel like
    hopping in and out, forget it. I tend to forget and kill uEMACS
    but that doesn't matter as it starts up fast.
