| Re: .0
Commodore hasn't made an Amiga 1000 in several months now. Representatives
of Commodore have stated that fact "on the record" several times now.
Official representatives of Commodore has said that they will manufacture
more Amiga 1000s if demand for them continues.
At a Boston Computer Society meeting, I heard the New England Commodore
Representative state that she was worried that they would run out of
1000s.
My theory is this: Commodore has announced that they plan on having a
trade-up policy where you give them your Amiga 1000 and some money
and they give you an Amiga 2000. Such a plan would cause Commodore
to have a large stockpile of refurbished Amiga 1000s to sale. I think
that "continued" demand for the Amiga 1000 means "if we run out of
refurbished Amiga 1000s, then we will manufacture more Amiga 1000s."

Re. .1
It is true that you can't get NEW A1000s but Commodore will not
get any old A1000s out of the A1000 to A2000 trade up.
I have talk to many different dealers about the 1000 -> 2000.
Commodore is not taking back the A1000s. Dealers have to sell them.
When a trade in is made the dealer profit is the A1000. The dealer
must then sell the A1000 to make his money.

so that means Commodore is waiting for some number of dealers trying
to order new A1000s before they start up the production line again?
arrrghhhh... don't they realize the need for computer with a detachable
keyboard that costs under $2000!

| The bright side of all this is all the great deals that can be had
on used (refurbished) A1000's. I bought mine recently for $449,
and I'm sure they'll be had for even less when 2000's start hitting
the streets and there's some volume of used 1000's coming in as
trade-ins.

| Hows this for a new, improved A1000...
Take the silly 256K Ram cartridge off the front panel, and put the
chips on the motherboard. Use the new Denise chip from the A500.
Then, install DUAL FLOPPYS in the front panel. Put 1.2 in socketed
ROM, fix the too-hot composite output, and sell the damn thing for $1000.
I don't know of anyone who can get by long term on a single floppy,
and I bet I could even squeeze two floppys, one on top of the other,
in the height of the present single floppy. Heck, the Toshiba Laptop
has dual floppys in a height of about 2.5 inches...
I bet there's even room for a few Zorro ][ slots inside the box.
The 1000 is just too beatiful a package to abandon to history.

| Where can I get a refurbished 1000 cheap? My friend is not quite
happy with her 500 since the composite output is monochrome (where
on the 1000 it is color), this is important because her main use
of it is to transfer graphics to video tape.

| If you don't mind mail order, MCS (MicroComputer Services??) has
them for $499 with a 90 day warranty. They advertise in almost every
computer magazine; I know they have ads in the latest AmigaWorld
and Amazing. I got mine at Computer Discount in Denver but I think
I got the last one they had at $449.

| M C S (Microcomputer Services) is advertising NEW Amiga 1000's (A1000)
for $650.00 and refurbished Amiga 1000's (A1000R) for $500.00.
Phone numbers for MCS = 800-433-7756 (orders) and 313-427-0267 for
information.
the Software Shop in Worcester is only selling refurbed Amiga 1000's
. I believe they are being sold as 512k machines with monitor for
$890.00 or so...orders -> 800-752-0050 information -> 617-756-6452.

| re: .6
Commodore will be coming out with a RF Modulator/Composite Color
widget for the 500 soon. So are some other companies. They might
have better quality Composite output than the A1000.
still vaporware, but might be a quick fix to the problem of no
color IF the widget will available soon.
