601.0. "canon pj1080a" by AUNTB::PRESSLEY () Sat Jul 18 1987 15:45

    I have the opportunity to buy a used canon pj1080a color printer.
    I like the printer but am afraid that getting supplies for it may
    become difficult since Canon is discontinuing the printer. Do I
    have a reason to fear? Also if Canon is going to discontinue the
    printer what will they supply to take its place? I heard that Canon
    decided to discontinue the printer because of a low profit margin
    ie its too cheap for the great quality it provides.

    the canon pj1080a printer supplies can be gotten thru radio-shack
    under thier own numbers for both the paper and the ink cartridges
    . they used to have the printer as well (marketed under thier own
    name as well , but they discountinued it when canon announced that
    they were no longer going to actively support the pj1080a).
    this does not mean that the printer is by any means dead... alot
    of people really enjoy the pj1080a with thier amigas. also radio
    shack will be able to get the supplies for quiet awhile to come.
    so in my appinion . . . go for it... i love mine...

601.2bought and paid forAUNTB::PRESSLEYWed Jul 22 1987 20:423
    Well I purchased the canon along with several roles of paper and
    ink cartridges for $170. I also got two drivers for the canon from
    my local amiga dealer, regular and phase 4.
601.3trying to print fancyAUNTB::PRESSLEYWed Jul 22 1987 23:216
    I have been trying to print to my canon thru basic using escape
    sequences in order to print in enlarged mode and also to print with
    different colors. The canon ignores the escape sequences and just
    prints in normal black and white mode. I typed in the examples
    from the manual but nothing seems to work. Anyone else successfully
    tried this?
601.4driver and character ROMPOLAR::GOSLINGAnd there he was - gone!Thu Jul 23 1987 16:1124
       (this is not in response to .3, but thought you may find it
        of interest)

       As you are probably aware (if you read 388) there is a 1080a
       driver in arc form available (in Dave Wecker's directory - I just
       checked). Included in this arc is the driver itself, as well as
       ordering instructions for a new character ROM that corrects (among
       other things) the "O" being printed as an upside down "Q" problem.

       I order the EPROM a couple of months ago and received it in less
       than 2 weeks (I'm in Canada, the guy you order it from is in the
       States). It took me about 5 minutes to install (most of that time
       being the uncabling and removal of the cover) and it works exactly
       as advertized. For $6.00 U.S. its a bargin!

       I was suprised to be told in the letter accompanying the EPROM,
       that I was the first person outside of the U.S. that had ordered
       the EPROM.

       Guess the word hasn't got around (how DOES the rest of the world
       get by without NOTES?), or maybe people like upside down Q's! :-)

    	You say that you tried the examples in the manual.

    		What Manual ?????

    	All escape sequences are traped by the print driver and mapped
    to follow AMIGA standard sequences. If you are not getting things
    to work, I would guess a problem with the driver OR you are using
    Canon ESC sequences not AMIGA sequences.

601.6enlarged works but...AUNTB::PRESSLEYSun Jul 26 1987 21:0216
    This works when printing in enlarged mode.

    lprint chr$(14);"enlarged"

    or

    lprint chr$(&27);chr$(14);"enlarged"

    but this does not work:

    lprint chr$(27);chr$(14);"enlarged"

    I have the canon pj1080a operation manual.

    I've only gotten enlarged mode to work. I'm still trying to print
    colors. Anyone else out there printed colors?
601.7Color ONNAAD::SWARRLearner's PermitMon Jul 27 1987 00:5041
    All printers ( which have a driver) use the same escape sequences.
    This is truly a great feature of the amiga. ( I wish all computers
    had this ). Other than knowing what a printer is capable of doing,
    the standard owners manual will be of little use.

    Anyway, to answer your immediate question.

    	Colors : Foreground <esc>[nm where n = a 2 digit ascii number
                                               made up of a 3 followed
    						by a digit 0-9
                 Background <esc>[nm where n = a 2 digit ascii number
    						made up of a 4 followed
    						by a digit 0-9
    I don't have a color printer, so I have not tried these sequences.

    Try to get a copy of Amiga World Special Issue . There is a pull
    out section that references the Printer Device Command Functions.
    If you really must write directly to the cannon you must use the
    Par: device instead of the Prt:. When you use the Prt: device the
    driver will strip out escape sequences any try to interptret them.

    In fact many of the sequences are Ansi or DEC standard, If all else
    fails try the escape sequences for DEC printers, many of them should
    work.

    	For example

    	Bold  on = <esc>[1m
    	      off= <esc>[22m

    	Enlarged on <esc>[6w
    		 off <esc>5w

    The printer control table can also be found in the ROM kernel Ref
    Libraries and Devices.

    I hope this is a help.

601.9ROM upgrade still available?BOMBE::MOOREclose B cloths mode on Deputy DanFri Feb 26 1988 02:337
    Does anyone know whether the EPROM discussed in .4 is still available?
    If so, can I get a copy of the ordering instructions somewhere?
    The CANON.ARC files in PAULY"AMIGA":: and DBW's areas contain only
    the driver image, no other info...

    Thanks,

       re .9

       Bruce,

       Don't know whether anyone responded to your request directly, but
       the following is (at least it was in June of 1987) the name,
       address and phone number of the individual in question:

                Alan Haight
                8034 Avalos Way,
                Citrus Heights, CA 95610

                916-726-2194

       I ordered the EPROM and was more than satisfied with the speed in
       which Alan responded to my request and subsequently the
       performance of the device itself.

       I don't remember the price he was asking, so suggest you give him
       a call.
